"Tonight Matthew, I am Damo Suzuki!"

The Fall- I am Damo Suzuki…

.And the Drums Coming Fast sez ominously da hip priest, and do the drums come fast and furious, do they.

Jaki Liebezeit would approve. Here The Fall, who have always said that their only explicit influence is Can pay their debts to the original German funksters. And they do with a vengeance, they shake the metronome until it tumbles and falls to the floor and then they crash it with their iron tipped boots. Mark E. Smith dons a japanese skin suit and, neglecting “western lessons”, rides the stormy weather with complete abandon, The Fall become a very scary and savage version of Can, the Can that we might have got if the germans had been bred in the wild haunted north and they had recorded in gutters instead of teutonic castles, their uncomprehensible ranting making a dark hidden spot of the subconscious tick, body mind and soul (in those whith some left) surrender to their assault and slide into the abyss, a black place where the only light is the manic shine of Mark E. Smith’s eyes.

The tempest he summons sound wilder than the one falling outside, it was about time his presence was felt here, definitely this Blog has become a more dangerous place, and that is the way it should be.

BUY The Fall

Cut to film ending…

As the crowd of slaves all rise, repeating the mantra, “No, I am Damo Suzuki !” one voice, stands far and above beyond the rest.

Just in case your reading this Mark, have you ever thought of going on Stars in Your Eyes? Just imagine my Gran’s face as you declair “Tonight Matthew, I am…..”. I recon i’d set the video for that…

Can - Oh Yeah

It is no secret who my favorite band are.

No review (it would be far too gushing), just listen to the fuckin thing.

I got to pack and go to the Leeds festival.

See you down the front for Pink Grease.

thanks a lot!! I think Can and The Fall embody perfectly what we want 20 Jazz Funk Greats to be about…it doesn’t matter if it is totally wired or totally blissed out, simply good music made with a mischievous spirit, sparks of genius…
    Best regards

Those homemade Can compilations are so sweet..
Like when mum makes you a good sandwich for lunch, you open the box on the table to tuck into the usual dry mush, and the woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowha!

Ross is responsible for my first Can tape i think.
He was in a bloody good band called Bush Pilot from Leeds - billed as Leeds answer to Slint. (Anyone who has any Bush Pilot, let me know.)

Keep forcing Can apon the world, your doing a good job.
