End of the Halloween candown

Ah, yeah, it’s friday and your 20jazzfunksters have to go back to their lairs to dust their capes and shine their fangs (a shout out to little fang from here!!) before the Halloween wick-end…

…so yeah, we leave you with two tracks that don’t need much of a comment, one of them is by Can, taken from Monster Movie (we knew we had to do it, it is the monster song week!), Malcolm ‘Blackula’ Mooney sounds in it like that mad preacher who warned the people from Tupelo about the incoming storm, the other, that shouldn’t be listened to until sunday, is the sweetest lil’ lo’fi romp ever written about Halloween, and is by the Wiggin sisters, better known as The Shaggs, those three New Hampshire saints at whose feet the whole anti-folk scene should kneel down and worship.

Both songs are from 1969 and although they are the sonic antithesis to each other, they share that elusive thing we appreciate so much, errr…genius. We say Can is the best band ever, Lester Bangs said the title belongs to the Shaggs. No need to decide, enjoy both and have a great scary weekend!!

Can- Father Cannot Yell

The Shaggs- It’s Halloween

First warning- On Monday Burning Idiot Noise play at the Penthouse, Phoenix Place, doors open at 8, Matt, one of our dj/blog guests is a member, and Celebricide and Raised By Wolves support. Surely it will be mindblowing…

  1. Lester is wrong and you are right in this case…Can are the greatest band that ever bestrode the Earth.Their records are STILL ahead of their time…imagine what it must have been like in 1969 to hear them! And if anyone still tries to claim that the B**tles are the best band ever, gently remind them that when Can were doing ‘Father Cannot Yell’ and ‘Yoo Doo Right’,the B**tles were doing ‘Maxwells Silver Hammer’ and ‘Octopuses Garden’.Sorry, uncalled for Anti-Fabs rant there.
My favourite Can album is ‘Tago Mago’ though my favourite song is ‘I’m So Green’…absolutely perfect.

  4. what a combo!!! can and the shaggs! yeah can is fantastic, it aint really fair of course comparing them to the beatles who despite their “experimentations” were always first and foremost a pop band. nothing wrong with that, nor is there with tago mago, or monster movie… two great great records. happy halloweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen.
