Undertones – Teenage Kicks

John Peel was my best friend. At school he made me feel like there was something else out there and other people who were into the same thing as me.
John Peel died of a heart attack last night while on holiday in Peru.
We were very lucky to have you.
Play The Undertones at least twice in a row for him, and have a cry if you want
Cheers Peelie.

Go on – name another DJ that means ANYTHING to you…
It’s impossible. Because John Peel’s name stands
alone.
I hate radio DJs. Their smug self-importance.
Their increasingly narrowing vision and unblinking
adherence to commercial forces and
corporate-funded playlists. Their annoying f*cking
voices.
John Peel was not like that. He just played
records (the ones HE wanted to play), and those
records changed my life. HE changed my life. More
so than any single person involved in music.
So it is with great regret that I bid farewell to
John Peel. He would loathe all these eulogies for
certain, but whether he liked it or not he was a
legend. Music will be a considerably poorer place
without him: He was a single majestic oak tree
that stubbornly blocked the path of the corporate
juggernauts, but now it has been felled, there
will be nothing to hamper their ‘progress’.
A sad day.
