Happy Neu! Year

Twas the night before New Year and nothing moved in the house, nothing except some feeble neurons in the frontal lobe of a 20 JazzFunkGreatster. He was trying to write something about one of his favourite songs, ‘Fur Immer’ by Neu!.

He had decided to avoid the evocative angle, he had already used it when talking about Hallogallo some time ago, when this blog was nothing but a small baby.

He didn’t want to get in the history of the album to which the song belonged, he had already done (or maybe better, linked to) that recently when talking about something else.

He decided that maybe he should discuss his personal preferences about Neu!, and how he liked better the austere guitar based incarnation of the band (as heard in 72 and 73) than the lush synth heavy one of 75 and La Dusseldorf. He thought that in a way ‘Fur Immer’ represented a transition between both states, keeping the calm, minimal feel of ‘Hallogallo’ but going more places, adding further layers and dynamics and flourishes to the most beautiful skeleton ever, yeah, more of a trip.

The Jazz Funk Greatster was going to add that he felt the vistas from this drive down the autobahn were slightly less rapturous than those enjoyed in the case of ‘Hallogallo’, but then ‘Fur Immer’ peaked on his stereo (around minute 8) and he got the usual goosebumps and he thought it wouldn’t be fair or right to say that, it appeared then that ‘Fur Immer’ was just another stage of a wonderful journey, new fields to be crossed again (1) as 2004 becomes 2005.

He couldn’t think of a more suitable soundtrack to enter, with hope, into the nascent year.

Neu!- Fur Immer

Happy Neu! Year to everyone!

Thanks to those who read us and listen to the music and come to our night and send emails and do their own thing and give us something to write and get excited about (very excited about the new Out Hud right now, listen to excruciatingly short samples of the new stuff here), and to those who write and put on amazing nights and draw and give us something to read and get excited about, this is for you (and for us!). Tina, Sarah, Gary, Neil, Dave, Bob, Russell W, Matt C., Sarah, Dom and Verity, Leigh Anne, Iain, Pete, Phil, Tash, Leesey, Matt, Donna, Carly, Scott, James, Charlotte, Debbie, Steve, Jim, Russell C., Felix, Laura, Christina, Carri, Lucy, we toast for you tonight.

(1) No contradiction there, this stuff might be old but it’s always Neu!, and when I say that I’m not cracking another of my cheap jokes…
