Hangedup

Last year saxophones and cowbells were rescued from the dungeons of ‘uncool’, will it be violins this season? Well, Patrick Wolf’s got a bit of that in in his new single, the Libertine. Some other people (sorry, forgot the actual link) bet on flutes on account of Dungen and Caribou.
What do you think dear readers? Will perhaps recent events in reality television provoke a maracas revival?
As long as this doesn’t come with a baggy renaissance I will be, if not happy, at least content.
Whatever… Hangedup are a canadian duo who do minimalist gypsy avant rock (hey!) using just drums and violin, I saw them in 2003 supporting Godspeed You! Black Emperor and they were much better than them.
This song, a New Order ‘cover’ is from their self titled debut album, which came out a few years ago in Constellation Records. It is a thing of understated drama and bare beauty, thanks to Dani for the tip.
(I reckon Canada is the country getting more postings per capita in this humble blog, word up!)
Ps- Thanks to everyone who came to 20JFG Nite last friday and filled the place in what has been our busiest ‘physical’ event so far (probably many of them didn’t know yours truly were playing records but still it was nice). BTW Skills 7 Stamina 12 were playing live downstairs/being played by us upstairs, check them out at Junior Aspirin records cos they are real good.

And finally we’d like to say a big ‘THANK YOU’ to Manuel from fantastic Dolby Surrender, he sent us a parcel full of issues of BANG!, an amazing fanzine made in Barcelona. Any Spanish-speaking readers around are advised to get hold of these mini-maps for an elegant navigation across the stormy waters of modern culture, while non-spanish speaking ones would be wise to learn the language so they can follow suit.

Thanks for reading & commenting everyone, glad you dig the setlist Anti-Rove…
You’ve Got What I Need…We 20jazzfunkgreatsters are not, paradoxically, great jazz funk buffs, that is, unless we are talking about the Throbbing Gristle school of jazz-funk. Still will check track if you recommend.
Merrick, you are wise. Maybe I should have put that, we’ve had a few covers around these last days…
Take care everyone and wish for 20JazzfunkStu’s recovery from a bout of evil flu!
cheers
