I am the Spranish Sping chicken!!

K homey, there ya go, Primavera. Nasti tent was the place were 20Jazzfunkkids saw !!! last year, the only reason they didn’t cry is they had sweated all their tears already.

This year Nasti was somewhere else, we mean, a different venue, but the spirit of madness and moon-atic dancing stayed, and not only cos Nic Offer was around with Out Hud, who had as much fun as the public and put minimal techno to shame with a live set that kicked us into a hedonistic post-pre-house stratosphere, but also because we enjoyed (some of the four to the floor hispa-chavs endured, I’d say) the bastard new wave how the fuck do u call it of…

Erase Errata!

With their martial organic yet mechanic rythms like merciless thermites drilling tunnels under the pathetic structures of macho cock rock, almost turned statues on stage, shredding guitar micro-riffs and concrete funk not funk basslines, a sudden trumpet shrieking, robotic Mark E. Smithic post-modern commentaries that in those circumstances can only be understood at a gut level, the girls in the crowd pogoed, they knew.

Erase Errata- Retreat, the most familiar (Kid606 remix)

The San Franciscan band didn’t play this song, it is a remix by Kid606 included in their nice Dancing Machine EP edited by Toubleman, but still we thought we’d post it cos you already know and own their two spazz-tastic studio albums, Other Animals and At Crystal Palace. Bouncy tense noisy techno pogo with brains and burned sneaker soles, ace.

Polysics!!

Devo-ted Japanese manga hero super-poses guitar worshipping nerdiness, keyboard robo-movements and spazzing spanish crowds who loved it like there was no tomorrow, someone behind me didn’t stop shouting ‘crazy kamikaze motherfucker’ for the whole gig, red overalls, sci-fi glasses and polywar-chants, it was certainly a sight to behold as they crashed against us breaking the poly-mer shell of our chemical shuttle, we almost drowned in poly-ght & magic.

Polysics- Black Out Fall Out

I am fairly sure they finished with this lovely electro(J)pop duet included in their 2003 Neu album and in the Polysics or Die compilation released last year, but I might be wrong as by that time I was busy unscrewing my neck-pipe to check if the wiring in my head was ok (I might have stolen that situation from Hunter S. Thompson, the original poly-sick).

Les Georges Leningrad!!!

Our readers know we love these montreal modernist dadaist post-punk savages, well, after seeing them sabotage what was supposed to be a ‘dance tent’ with colourful outfits, barrages of noise and amphetaminic drumming, pig-being-eviscerated shrieking, a freak-o cavalcade to close and a liquid and food battle with a public who mostly hated them, the only thing that we can say is…we love them times 1000 and can’t wait to see them in Brighton in a couple of weeks. Yay!

They played stuff mostly off their last album, the freek jazz natch wave what have you awesome ‘Sur les traces de Black Eskimo’, so we are posting, as a virtual encore, this lovely song included in their freek jazz natch wave what have you awesome debut ‘Deux Hot Dogs Moutarde Chou’ (btw, and in case you were wondering, Iggy and the Stooges also ruled). Both are out in Alien8 Recordings and you should buy them if you wanna increase your insanity quotient, I mean, if you wanna get on with the programme and be one of the masters of the universe.

Les Georges Leningrad- Bad Smells

Yeah, go to Primavera Sound next year, it’s crazy good but I think I’m still hangover.

(Grabba Grabba Tape also played a rather beautiful mind-numbing 20 minutes set in that tent which included group-monster hugging at the end, sweet).

BTW Trax Juanfunkgreats played at last 20jazzfunknite in Brighton a coupla weeks ago

The Thing- Art Star
Die Monitr Batss- Blackout Cross
Death Sentence: Panda- Wild Thing
Flipper- Sex Bomb
Sun City Girls- Blue Mamba
NWA- Gangsta Gangsta
2 Sisters- B-Boys Beware (dub)
Suicide- Mr. Ray
John Carpenter- Snake Shake
Goblin- Theme from Suspiria
Liars- They don’t want your corn they want your children
Can- Oh Yeah
Black Mountain- Druganaut
Xiu Xiu- Pox
White Magic- The Gypsies Came Marching
Deerhoof- Come See The Duck
The Sticks- Slam Party
Mission of Burma- New Nails

If he had had time JuanFunkGreats would have liked to play Mu (Tigerbastard), LCD Soundsystem (Disco Infiltrator), Les Georges Leningrad (Supa Doopa), Electrelane (Bells), Gang Gang Dance (God’s Money VI), Grabba Grabba Tape (Sxe is for Sex?), M.I.A. (Pull up the People), Beastie Boys (Shake Your Rump) and many others oh well.

Btw Russell Warrior’s tracklist will be posted soon, I’d do that now but I have it in the UK…sorry!

The little spanish bull wearing a flamenco hat says hi from these lands too. Bye!!

I went to Primavera last year and found it a bit odd. Musically it was incredible… they sure know how to pick a lineup. !!!, The Fall, Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, 2 Many DJs, Dizzee Rascal.. 100% quality the whole way. Having spent the last 15 years going to glastonbury though, i found the crowd a bit strange. No-one seemed to be really cutting loose & enjoying themselves (except the English / Irish contingent of course)… anyone behaving at all strangely was doing so in a real ‘look at me, i’m really crazy me’ kind of way. The club on the last night was full of beautiful people & amazing tunes, but there was so much coke sloshing about that there wasn’t a lot of smiling or laughing going on. Just joyless robo-dancing. Maybe that was just the experience I had, but I didn’t find the Catalans very friendly at all.

Going to give Lowlands a bash this year I think.

It is difficult to compare to glasto as you don’t camp and stuff but generally i’m all about euro festivals compared to the “it’s 11 oclock, all stop” English ones.

The best thing (apart from the better lineups) is the lack of drunken thugery, I mean that museum in the middle of the festival site with huge glass windows, and no one tried to trash it! They have clean toilets, so no one craps in the floor or pisses on you and people don’t dump rubbish everywhere. All those beautiful building would have been wrecked in England by twats.

It is more laid back (it doesn’t close, No need to binge drink, !!! are not on till 4am – save yourself) and come out at like 3 in the morning dressed to the nines to go party, when most of us English have been guzzling beer since 4 in the afternoon. I’m like, what are you doing? You missed all the bands? And they are just there to party and treat it like a club that’s open for 3 days, arriving as and when they are ready.

The debauchery and freaking out all takes place at 11am the next day when your dancing in a swimming pool with showers above it in a gay club full of topless girls with Black Strobe djing and !!! still dancing.

We couldn’t speak the language well but just went for it and we luckily met locals who were going for it too (especially down the front for Black Strobe, Soulwax, !!!, Chicks on Speed, Xiu Xiu, Numbers, and in the Hardcore noise club with Donna Summer, Kid 606 ect). Gutted The Human League pulled out last year…

For some of the bigger bands like Pixies, The Fall, James Chance I kinda felt bad standing on people, but you get that at any big gig i guess.

Spanish people do dance weird and don’t go for it as much till the early morning, but it’s so bloody hot.

What other music festivals do people recomend for my holidays?

Sonar is v.fun and like a city wide Primavera.

Its a bit wrist band tastic and gets taken over at night by dancing freaks who i suspect are related to fashionable cyber crusties.

I love all the other things that happen in the city during the fest and you can often blag into some amazing underground stuff. My girlfriend says its too trainspotter music, but she likes all the freaks.

    ///////////////////

Benicasim leaves you needing a holiday after, my friend nearly died there.

Fucking awsome if you have the stamina and treck to the beach every day.

Be prepared to stay awake for 3-4 days with not much food. Its too hot to sleep in the day, and they play music till 10 in the morning.

Passing out in the afternoon in any shade you can find before rushing to see Daniel Johnston at 10pm is your only hope.

Not so much a festival as a hedonistic endurence test. Nice to lie down at the top of the hill behind the festival site and watch Kraftwerk at 3am though aparently.

i just went to this one day psuedo festival called sasquatch in bum-fuck washington and it was pretty awesome. the music is way more mainstream indie than the stuff you guys are talking about, but the setting is amazing.

Jesus that view behind the satge is so epic.

I’d be like, erm can you move the bands over i just want to look at the frigin valley.

The river, the mountains, the sunset its all too perfect!

You guys got a big country over there.

I went to Primavera this year…. really awesome. Sure the mood is apparently less drunk-fucked, a bit more quiet, but the lineup was great, and the audience, around 4. am, was only made of drunk people or fanbase, so to say people were really partying.
Otherwise I can recommend some other festivals in France, like ‘La route du rock’ or ‘rock en seine’. but the lineup it tied between blockbusters and obscure french bands (not always good ones)

  7. 20jazzfunkgreats

Always wanted to check out ‘La route du rock’ evrer since we met some mad French people at Benicasim.

They were taking the piss out of us saying you English are all like Trainspotting drug junkies, and then they managed to get so drunk one of them pissed himself, another broke his leg and the girl shaved her hair off and cut all her head and got sunburn on it.

Drugs rule comared to that, except when your Primal Scream and loose control of your bowels in the backstage swimming pool then cannot be arsed to give a good performance on stage.
