Norwegian Lady – Dance Champion
This is a tiny ode to the glory of being the hero and bestest dancer in your town (ahh, sweet).
Like a good mod face you wear the sharpest clothes, dance the finest moves, get all the girls (cos every girls crazy bout a sharp dressed man). With that much good karma, you know there is some badness around the corner.
This is worse than busboy, or driving off the cliffs though.
Are Norwegian Lady the new Art Brut or something? I mean I know Art Brut are only just the new Art Brut for most of you and when we first heard their articulate and witty call to arms Formed a Band our hearts leapt with joy. I bravely fought in their corner, taking on all comers who claimed Formed A Band was a novelty song (aren’t all the best?). I don’t like the album much and although they bravely strode a path away from the Libertines controlled NME rock I feel they kinda let me down in not becoming The Fall. In hindsight this was a pretty tall order.
Norwegian Lady are more immediate art novelty Huggy Bear/Fall song panders, with an odd transformation into screaming early David Byrne. What’s with the Tom Araya backing vocal anyway?
We know what you are thinking, we can see into your mind through the computer screen.
erm…they look like paedophiles in the picture? no no wrong sorry…erm…this song is too short, they forgot to write the rest of the song, and you cannot dance to it! Yes!
Luckily the nice people at Delta B recordings have provided us with two remixes by Eargoggle aka Lucas Pettersson who turns it out like Tiga and Vicious Pink Goo who turn it out like epileptic acid.
For the moment I think Dance Champion is annoying and great, but in six months you can dowse me in kerosene and set me on fire and dance round my burning corpse in pagan masks like
0898Dave – Rubbish Monkey(stream only, sorry)

Them – I Can Only Give You Everything
What better song would you choose to be the greatest mod dancer to than the Irish punk granddaddies I Can Only Give You Everything.Van Morrison has a voice like a Staxx Records car alarm, fuck knows what happened to that Irish accent.
Punk fathers? Yeh! Come on Van may be a god bothering Cliff Richard friend now, but Patti Smith did Gloria, this was done by Richard Hell AND MC5, do you need any further recommendations? Them were making it and taking it right back to Detroit! Give it up!
The garage crunch guitar gets me every time with a backbeat you cannot resist and Van’s fog horn growl tells it like a true preacher man. If the (sadly deceased, or just resting?) Coachwhips made Northern Soul this is what is would have been the sound. Come on DFA 1979, sod all that nwobhm we want a dirty Staxx stomper on the next album, you got the voice – use it. Punk soul is the new punk funk!
Need to calm down a bit now, all hot and sweaty after that twisting and mop shaking freak beat.

Perhaps some Velvet Underground played in a swirling feedback loop of Spacemen 3? That would be handy, and sung by a girl with a soothing voice that makes you listen closer, like if The Jesus and Mary Chain got together with Strawberry Switchblade and did a minimalist take on Since Yesterday maybe.
Bob is your unkle!
I know, I know we have put up Silver Apples covers and originals aplenty, and they are getting blogged a lot at the moment. Goldkixx in his recent supa duppa Silver Apples entry mentioned Windy & Carl did this version of Program, so Stuarts being Stuarts I had to go fetch, and what do you know? Its an absolute gem.
Detune your radio program (just like the original!), drift out of all signals and let it wash over you in echoing whispers. Its like being stroked by a giant cat, let yourself purr and it will give you some dinner later(& if your lucky catnip!).
p.s. For Brighton types, Artschool Dropouts featuring The Chalets and La Frange at the Engine Rooms Thursday night. Go see, better than the bad place u know.
Epilogue -This post is tagged with busboy crazy bout dance champion fire and dance girls good karma huggy bear luckily new art norwegian paedophiles path away pink goo prog rave set me on fire sharp dressed man tom araya

there’s a really good version of ‘I can only give you everything’ recorded by the Spitballs, who were a combination of various power-pop bands (Earthquake, Greg Kihn Band, the Rubinoos) on the Beserkley label in the late 70′s. It’s somehow cleaner than this one, but yet also dirtier. Je like.

Not heard The Spitballs (great name, i want a t-shirt) vesion, but i think most garage compilations* have one or two bands either covering or just lifting from this, and we don’t blame them!
*except Ministry of sound presents Garage, which didn’t.
