Isi F

Featuring:

Prog breakcore is the way forward

That’s what I thought after seeing Jason Forrest do his thing at Wrong Music the other night, it was quite fantabulous to enjoy his not-quite-gig-not-quite-dj session completely sober, geeking out with Scott while the rest of the crowd shook in a tribal druggy celebration.

Beats dropping on top of guitars that sounded like synths who looked like boys with dreadlocks who spazzed their chins who were girls in no disco this is no disco shake yr bass what the fuck is this??

It is a teenager with Asperger syndrome absorbing 50 years of musical history and yelling it through a distorted loudspeaker, it’s a computer with 500 GB of Mp3s in its memory reconfiguring them randomly and making you dance to the result.

And not necessarily with the viciousness one usually finds in the breakcore squad, no, knowing when to be hard but also when to be nice.

Maybe I’m too old for this jerky stuff but still it fills me with joy.

Plunderphonics never was more fun!!

Jason Forrest- Sperry and Foil

This track is taken from his recent Lady Fantasy ep released by Sonig. And it contains a bit of a surprise for Neu! fans…

Some of you might see this reappropriation of ‘Isi’ as some sort of heresy, o god, that beautiful melody we have grown up with chopped up like a baby in a Pagan Summer Solstice ritual and sprinkled on top of mentalist breaks! Noooo!

Well, Yes. I love ‘Isi’ and I love this and I think it’s a thousand more times loyal to Krautrock’s true spirit of constrained improvisation and funky innovation than the efforts of 10 of those bands who lay down a motorik beat and bore us to def with their progressions to nowhere.

Disclaimer by myself- Krautrock was always a progression towards nowhere, when does Hallogallo start and where does it end? I love bands who lay down a motorik beat if they do it well, anyway, I was exaggerating for the sake of argument, as it were.

But it doesn’t matter cos my argument finishes at minute 6.47 and if by then you don’t agree that this track is a beautiful labour of love towards Neu! then there is no way I’m gonna be able to convince you with words.

  1. Everything Jason Forrest does is solid gold- his stuff is untouchable, in my opinion. Cannot wait for his next full-length. Nice write-up!

  2. eeek. I went to dig out ‘isi’ for comparision purposes, only to realise that my copy of neu 75 appears to have gone missing from its case. Where do you think it might be? as you can imagine, my life is effectively on hiatus until this situation is resolved.

  3. I quite like the “10 of those bands who lay down a motorik beat and bore us to def with their progressions to nowhere” though Juan. :(

They mean i can play them and sit there smug faced going, ahh not as good as the originals (but really i do like em).

Are we trying to fill this void?

  6. tru, still I got the Electrelane album simply on the premises of it being a motorik beat driven thing and that’s about it (not that it is more, still…)

    whatevers!

  8. What makes this “breakcore”?

The word “breakcore” seems to have become intensely devalued over the last year or so. First I see people calling LCD Soundsytem “breakcore” and then stuff like this?

Breakcore has been an actual genre for almost 10 years now.. and it’s basically gabber with breakbeats. Not this.. :)

That said, I like this! Thanks for posting it. I came here via The Hype Machine, fwiw.

  9. I guess prog breakcore = breakcore – gabber?? ;)

I’m not an expert anyway, went to see Shitmat not that long ago and, yeah, I guess that was more according to your definition.

I would never call LCD breakcore though! (who did??)

Thanks for reading & commenting & thanks for the info on AD&D anonymous (I’ve had one for a while but haven’t listened to it yet)

  10. I heard Shitmat over at Dozerblog, and I agree.. that’s what I think of when someone says “breakcore.”

I think it was some music journalist who cited LCD as breakcore. Pretty hilarious..

  11. Ahh!

I can clear this up, listen to the other Jason Forrest stuff, its breakcore.

Like always at xxjfg we have posted the track that sounds most unlike the rest of the artists output.

    Typical, untypical.

    xxjfgs.
