Here comes the man, hell yeah, he dee-jayed in Japan and got shot at in Korea, he taught Phil Spector the studio tricks, he made the twangy guitar respectable, he is the reason Gram Parsons didn’t sing in Sweetheart of the Rodeo and the reason Nancy became more than the daughter oh the voice, he watched the bugs run across his swimming pool and then moved to Sweden to pray them bars away, he is one of the few legends left, oh yeah, folks, please clap your hands, here’s the man, and of course his moustache, here you have Mr. Lee Hazlewood…

And today, ladies and gentleman, we will be posting one of the tracks of his glorious ‘For Every Solution is a Problem’ compilation of rarities released in 2002, this is the man at his groovetastic best, sounding like a cesspool of lasciviousness, the dark side of the cowboy who got ripped off in ‘Summer Wine’, a sexual version of the Pale Rider maybe.
Lee Hazlewood- Your Thunder and Your Lightning
Just check those echoes, the twang, the layers of percussions, tambourine, slide adding up to a haunted stomper, this is Lee at the heights of his studio powers, and on top of all the technical mastery, his voice resonating with an elegant raunchiness which rivals Serge himself, ‘then I’ll kiss that secret place so wet and warm and waiting to be free’, aw, Lee, come on, you’re turning us on…
As a bonus track, there you have…
Lee Hazlewood- These Boots are Made for Walkin’
Not what you’d expect eh?
Yep, that’s him all right, the deadpan tone which leaves more space for the instrumental to breathe (and blow yer hips away), the meta-lyrics about the recording of the Nancy version, that little ego-trip rap, ‘You put on your boots, and all put on mine, and we’ll sell a million records any old time’, yeah, I think I like this better.
It is included in ‘These Boots are made for Walkin’, the Complete MGM Recordings’ , which is a hell of a double cd pack, by the way, you will surely have it already if you are a Leehazlewoodholic like me.
And now off, later this week we’ll will bring you a little report on our trip to London, which was super-fun, it was a pleasure to meet so many nice people, listen to good records, see Zongamin blowing away Koko and prance around, oh yes.
Ah, and remember, it’s the Do this Friday at the Core Club, £4/£5, drink promos all night and lots of tunes brought to you by Nascent, Geekbeat, Messing Around, Ladyfest DJs and our good selves. Come early to witness Hands on Heads doing their thing, ‘Yummy Fur meets XBXRX meets the Unicorn’? aha, we’re sold.
