Drum’s Alive & kicking

Yep, the new album by our beloved Liars came out yesterday, monday, and it’s a pretty sight.

Thing is my vinyl copy seems to have some sort of defect and the second cut (Let’s not Wrestle Mt heart Attack) prances and bounces rather upsettingly. I have decided not to listen to it any more and go and exchange it in the shop tomorrow.

I very much hope this is not a press defect or I’ll cry.

But let us not worry for now, because the music is powerful and jumps the deformed groove and spreads through the room like posion gas, the pounding of the drum and the sick drone intoxicate those of us who like to look from our windows at night and imagine things moving in the darkness beyond, each crashing cymbal snare and bass is the heartbeat of a different beast, any of them kills with a single blow and you say thanks because it’s so exciting to die this way.

This post written in the darkness of a basement is but a humble tribute to the power of Drum, as channelled throughout drum’s not dead, but also felt in…

Coughs- Sexual hijinks

If Fright Makes Right, Coughs rule that weird and unexplored area of the forest where the leather-clad industrial beats of Einsturzende Neubauten spread over a skinny no wave DNA mutant like Venom did with Spiderman, turning it into some kind of monster that will chew your body and spit your tendons.

This track is from their 7′ split with Night Wounds, also released yesterday in Not Not Fun records‘ Bored Fortress Singles Club. It’s got a very fancy packaging with little orange leaves probably hand-glued one by one, don’t let the beauty of the sleeve fool you because its contents are evil, watch out or they’ll bite yer ass like the Necronomicon did to poor Brucey (coolest guy ever with Johnny Cash btw) in Army of Darkness.

Impractical Cockpit are Load Record’s new signing, and ‘To be Treated’, their forthcoming album, is a beautifully sick trip through trenches of dissonance full of slimy snakes and apocalyptic psychic minefields, oft things speed up, they hold you by the hand and pull fucking hard, there goes your arm.

Impractical Cockpit- Passion of a Cop

This is rave music for psychos, the way everything in this track is drenched in distortion and feedback constitutes a glorious example of the kind of achievements that can be accomplished when human genius is applied in the wrong direction with enough anti-energy.

We finish with the drums that bred Liars’, back in 1978 This Heat sketched an image of the future with tense but delicate pulse, just take a deep breath and eavesdrop the stark conversation between drums, the monotone of a guitar note trembles and echoes in doubt infinite, a desolate portrait of love-is-that-love?, krautrock made in a country where robots didn’t write odes to the autobahn but wore riot-gear and cracked dissenting skulls.

This Heat- Twilight Furniture

This is from the remastered version of their self-titled album reissued earlier this month.

And this is it for now, good night. A first warning, 20JFG will be doing a Nation of Shopkeepers in the Lock Tavern in Candem, London, this Saturday the 25th from 8-1. We will play the usual collection of fucked up beautiful-in-their-own-un-negotiable-terms tunes (”German funk, Italian disco, Canadian dada, BBC lounge, French A.O.R., Japanese noise, Providence hardcore, Sheffield soul, John Carpenter soundtracks, Cleveland punk and other shenanigans”) not-mixed with the usual clumsiness and lack of attention towards tempo, audience tastes etc etc. Come and say hi, maybe buy us a drink, but don’t offer 1FG any cigarrettes as he’s quitting.

The day after we’ll be enjoying Liars at the Curzon Cinema yay!

And the drum will grab the lapels of our hearts and shake them hard until money and hang-ups and bad memories and worries and what will they say fall tumbling down like the Monks said and we’re left in a state of headbanging bliss, even if only for a second. These boys can’t get it wrong, won’t get it wrong.
