some old new wave and the new new new wave of no wave

Staying up late can expose you to terrifying things. Like Late Night Hollyoaks and Channel 5 in general, or the hideous sounds of flatmates having ugly sex, ack! (no link for that, sorry). But it can also be incredibly beneficial. On P2P networks, the small hours of the morning in the UK means that the kids of the US and Canada come online and your bleary eyed, sleep depraved xxjfg-er can download all the good stuff. Yay! Thanks US and Canada kids! But buy the records too, yeah? or the RIAA will get you!

Amongst others, I found the Y Pants album last night and its H O T!

Minimal post-punk percussion, bursts of lasers and the kind of not-bothered female vocals that were popular, then weren’t, now are again. They ain’t too keen on keeping within one time signature too which makes for unpredictable listening, and ‘instruments’ the trio played comprised of thumb drums, toys, and pots and pans. The complete works of Y Pants were re-issued Delta 5 style back in 2003 but i’m finding it hard to track down through the usual channels.

Y Pants- Beautiful Food

Y Pants want Beautiful Food, they like it, especially as it squelches the synths and chimes the bells real ‘orrorshow to make an off-kilter aural-meal such as this. I’d put up the whole album but that’s not good Blog manners now is it? No, instead, track down the CD and then let me know where you found it, then cross your fingers and wish for some clued-up record label to re-release it on vinyl … its so ripe it hurts.

1FG can’t watch Channel 5 aka Rambo, Chuck Norris and Adolf Hitler TV, but still he is sleep deprived, depraved and depressed, you shouldn’t start typing sad tirades at 11 if you don’t plan to stay up for a couple of hours drinking coffee and pounding on the keyboard like the coca-cola light of gonzo.

Just gonna do that, because I’m light at everything I do.

And if the Roger Sisters were the lightest of all the new-new-wavers, and have gone a bit boring and sludgy in their last album, then the Seconds were some of the heaviest, aurally. Let me kind of explain, if New Wave (and new-new wave) was about applying the punk aethos to genres other than heavy rock, and Roger Sisters did the B52s and some 60s garage, and Ex Models looked into Devo, then the Seconds are new wave waving drone, no wave and the Shaggs

Hey wait…

How the hell do you apply the punk aethos to the punkest band ever? And how do you do the new wave of the no wave? fuck knows, I warned you I was tired when I started writing this, I think all the above is just waffle, please look at me funny and say…

JUAN SHUT IT!!

Thankssss, that’s what I am going to do, you just listen to these two tracks from the Seconds’ forthcoming album in 5RC, which goes by the name of Kratitude and you should buy cos its fucking awesome.

Did I mention that one of the Seconds has this side-project called the Yeah yeah Yeahs? No I didn’t cos its not particularly relevant to this review, I met him and the singer at a house party and they’re super-sweet, I love these people!

The Seconds- Scheisse

The Seconds- Tintal

Where they actually sound like the Slits and Coachwhips playing frisbee with roadkill in shitville oklahoma, or a bunch of rebellious girl scouts covering Oneida for the national band competition and winning like this was one of those inspirational 80s movies…

Good new Wave was about making types like me who try to write about music sound even more foolish than usual. Thanks The Seconds, you win every time.

I’m going to bed now. Laters, tomorrow I am legally changing my name to ‘Waffle boy’.

Don’t forget to come to the Lock Tavern in Camden Saturday 25th from 8.30pm to 1.00am to witness 12.666(recurring) of 20JFG doing the FUNN Nation of Shopkeepers thing, for free as usual, we’re gonna play all the hits from the invisible underworld, and I might breakdance with my graffittied clogs, you know, we’re coming from the ‘countryside’, we’re the hick underground.

All the records we play will be dedicated to XXJFSteve, who is currently resting, recovering and strengthening his brain like a Mentat for a speedy comeback to wreak revenge on those who harmed his foot. The floor in the Penthouse is soooo dead.

So london readers, see you saturday dudes, unless you’re going to the Love is All/Bricolage/X-Wife gig of course, we would if we could, come on, come to the Lock for a quick pint before. Maybe will see you afterwards at some party or the Barfly or something, don’t laugh at us if we look confused, please help us and don’t rip us off, we are only rural types lost in capital city.

You know our motto:

‘We lost the last train to cool so we’re riding a donkey’

If you stay in lil Brighton go and watch Trencher and the Moulsecoomb Sword Gang at the Engine Rooms on saturday, it’s an early gig man. Support Psykick Dancehall man, they will make you suffer because they love you.

And on sunday go and watch Burning Idiot Noise. ‘Hurricane psych propulsion from the sons of the scorched mind’ at the Freebutt for a mere £3…as Mat himself put it: likeable and respectable. Ok, not respectable. Will be bringing you a proper ‘jazz and funk’ post by his good self next week, it’s rather awesome and you should look forward to it if you have a clue.
