Like it was the 80s all over again

Featuring:

Fuck prog-disco let’s prog!

Zombi would rock my world with the strength of Skeletor after a sack of green-beret grade amphetamines even if they were shit, I mean, how cool does it get, a duo playing imaginary soundtracks to Dario Argento, George A. Romero and John Carpenter movies, Corey the Huss introduced me to them, hello? hello?

Thing is they aren’t shit, they are amazing.

Zombi- Sapphire

This synthetic thriller oddyssey through the moon-lit motorways of arpeggiated neon-lit bliss is in the flip of their tour exclusive Digitalis EP (you listened to the a-side in the wonderful Black Balloon but I reckon this is the killer) and it has Zombi going on a bit of a ‘new’ direction, more Italo and less Jan Hammer flanging drums.

Those of you afraid they might have decided to cross-over to the dark-side of repetitive cliched coca-disco need not worry though (and god knows these nine minutes are worth your nine minutes, differently from so many 12” out these days), the 20JFG kids have had a sneak preview of their forthcoming album, ‘Surface to Air’, and we can confirm the theme is thrill, blood and drama, no revivalist vibe or tired formula as these boys never travelled to the future that is now, they stayed there and perfected a time machine with which to send us lovely artifacts such as the one you’re listening to today.

An anti-time machine, or the philosopher’s stone of the cosmetics industry.

Talking about cosmetics industry & surgery annalla shit, does it get any more 80s than taking coke by a silvery pool outside a manor in LA? Is Brett Easton Ellis there? Hey Brett! He’s wearing a Banana republic sweater, pleated white chinos and a ralph lauren stripy top. Brett, move your bitch-ass over to the stereo and put this tape on.

He obeys, slides on his hush puppies and walks to the chrome guetto blaster, press play.

MYNX- I’m so L.A

To be honest my tolerance for irony in art is less than zero, ironic revivalism is the last refuge of the trendy coprophagous (don’t expect me to link that) scoundrel, except when it is done with such flair and energy on top of a 52girl beat, I mean, LA sounds just like a Hollywood-star-less version of Brighton, as Homer would say (Simpsons reference 1), ‘it’s funny because it’s true’.

So we’ll agree this is simply cultural commentary, nevermind the haircuts. It seems Mynx are no more anyway, I’ve been scouring the web for info about them and only found year-old bits, which is decades in trendy music-spiel, oh well, that’s the life-span of your average post-Electroclash synth combo these days innit, it’s a sick and hard world out there.

Another reason for praise is their laziness: I tend to like lazy people because I’m one myself, just check out how the last minute of the song is just a re-hash of what came before, wonderful! that’s pop for you, being repetitive, you know, they are in the show business and they have to be repetitive mum, what Bart? They are in the show business and they have to be repetitive mum, repetitive, what Bart? (Simpsons reference 2).
