Clouds lift, but then descend once more, night creeps in, you fire up the speakers, this comes to mind. Just. Press. Play.
Black Magic DisKo! DC Recordings gave us The Emperor Machine which we bowed down in adulation for, but Padded Cell too? Spoilt!
But where as The Emperor Machine rock the African-voodoo-hypno-robo-circa.1978 end of the disco spectrum, Padded Cell are conjuring Beelzebub in clouds of glitter-flecked black smoke and committing His Unholiness to vinyl. Sweet!
This stuttering little demon seems to of been conceived, written and recorded live in the grimiest underground discotheque that can only be accessed from the same pitch-black forest clearing where Liars first gave birth to ‘They Were Wrong So We Drowned’. I suppose you could class it as ‘jaunty’, until you turn around and realise that that funny sound is the bats that have ridden the mainline from Hell to the forest disco, ricocheting their clawed-wings off the black walls, and all the time you’ve been dancing next to the shapeless creature depicted on the cover.
So this isn’t the newest offering from Padded Cell – searching messageboards suggest the buzz is already at fever pitch for the new 12″ ‘Are You Anywhere’. We have that but aren’t aloud to give it away for fear of being captured and sacrificed to Satan, and we’ll go to Hell when we’re good and ready thank you.
Now onto some friends . . .

Brighton based Kraut dance fiends Fujiya & Miyagi have a brand spanking new purple-sleeved 10″ out today, and here is a super-sweet taster:
Fujiya & Miyagi- Ankle Injuries
This is the a-side but to hear the b-side go and buy the 10″ you fuckin’ leeches!
Kidding about the leeches thing. . . yeah, this is a Can/Neu! influenced pop particle, but its bad form to just write them off as a Can tribute band, they have more up their wizard-sleeves. New album, ‘Transparent Things’, is out via Tirk on the 26th April featuring alternate versions of previous singles.
‘Ankle Injuries’ is (in the bands own words) about walking to school as a kid and finding a porno mag in the middle of the road and realising that a female’s genitalia is different from a male’s. Can’t argue with that, a good a subject as any to pin onto a motorik beat I guess?
They are touring too: 7th April at The Pressure Point in Brighton with Damo Suzuki (yes, him!), The Spitz in London on the 9th with Damo Suzuki, Steeple Remove and Tim Sweeney and then they play the Encompass Festival at 93 Feet East in London on the 12th too, so go have fun!
