Space Race Lego Rave

Brighton is sunny, apocalyptically rainy and stormy all at the same time today, with a hairstyle destroying wind that shears through the streets like invisible bullet trains. I am inside packing boxes moving from xxjfg Towers to Genuine Heights, listening to Lego rave ballads:

XXJFS2 gave the heads up on Thrust Lab, Baltimore based 8-bit enthusiasts, Daft Punk if they were 5 years old and obsessed with graph paper, Pacman and chocolate monsters, instead of gleaming robots, Macross and France:

Thrust Lab – Dance Sweet Dracula

At the merest mention of 8-Bit, Crystal Castles obviously crash into our skulls but whereas CC break your face with vicious punk Mario beats, Thrust Lab are more about pretty little twinkly Sonic The Hedgehog sparkling ring-catching japes in the Star Light Zone; if there was a stage in Sonic where he went chasing rings in a club, Thrust Lab would be the DJs. ‘Dance Sweet Dracula’ sees Dracula not bursting from shadows and draining maidens of their blood, but hop-scotching with glee through pixelated fields with Tails and Sonic, freeing the cute animals from the clutches of evil Robotnick, aaahhhhh.

Ew, yuck, I feel all warm and gooey and my hardened hater-hating exterior is softening – time for some cold electric beats to get back to the robot:

Zonetech – 6am

You could actually be forgiven for wincing when ’6am’ strikes up as it sounds decidedly “dub” but fear not, it changes. Once the main coda bleep starts to fold around and repeatedly turn inside-out onto itself we are in zero gravity disco mode, spot lit by the moon and backed by the stars we do some break dancing, dodging the rhythmic lasers and riding the reverb off of Saturn’s rings.

Silver-suited moon-men Zonetech have a snazzy little cassette ‘Stations Of The Zone’ coming out on Blood Of The Drash in September. Buy it cos it will be good, and y’know, people don’t own enough cassettes nowadays yeah?

’’’’’’’’’’’’

PS: Packing is so boring, just came back from the final show of the European tour of !!! – the real renegades of funk – it was nothing short of perfect! They played new stuff! It was good! Yay!
