Listen upp

You NY hipsters, you know how Tussle can do these magnificent Liquid Liquid ESG Konk style jams, yeah, I love ‘em, they’re great. You can hear Tiny Sticks and Scraper throughout, which I guess makes them punk-funk, but in a good way, without that dreaded lowest common denominator standard disco-punk beat which makes us spit blood not nicely. Nah, not like that, but with the energetic committed energy of super-precise wild eyed beat obsessed nerds, just go and see them live.

But I’m ranting again, I was gonna say I like them even more when they shake it up, like, say, when they sprinkle their irresistible rhythm section with ghostly kraut echoes (check kindermusic) or when they go relentlessly darkly percussive on your ass, brap.

Tussle - Elephants

Does what is says on the label: the missing link between Afrobeat and Detroit Techno is there, or Valetta Fanfares made by kids who like to bang on things, waves and waves of drums coming from the dark forests like voodoo spirits on the war path, shoot the shooters and hunt the hunters, and press rewind if this hasn’t blown your mind.

Their record is called Telescope Mind and is out on Smalltown Supersound.

This is nice and makes our heads funny.

Or, if your not an NY hipster (or even a European pastiche on such an individual) and you like your shit skeletal and minimal, naked like a poor defenseless Japanese schoolgirl about to be terrorised in some tentacle porn Anime film (I don’t like that sort of thing, just using it as an analogy, you understand?), you might want to load this information cartridge into your memory unit slots:

Automat - Droid

Yes thats Droid not Android, not lab-grown skin covered exoskeleton but a droid made of whirling motors and clanking cogs. I am told of a certain issue of National Geographic that has a story on an actual android being constructed. It works and it looks exactly like its constructor in each and every way. This may be a rumour, a mere fabrication to further confuse and abstractly spin out this 20JazzKid’s already ‘wonky’ ways of thought, but it also may be true and that means that the future we all dream of may indeed be here already.

I’ve detoured, sorry. ‘Droid’ is a simple casio-driven Commodore 64 game soundtrack. Drums are not rich sounding instruments, they are buttons to be pressed, sounds that can be assigned to keys. All kinds of frequencies of bleeps are reigned in to create a kind of alternate Miami Vice theme, alternate as in if Tubbs and Crockett had not been rule bending Florida cops but instead atom-bending halitosis-suffering Physics tutors from Swindon. Imagine that…
