Soul Jazz could be called something annoying like ‘tastemakers’ with ‘their fingers on the pulse’ but these shitty terms actually hold true. The ‘New York Noise’ compilations rule as its well difficult (and expensive) to find some of the artists on vinyl and Soul Jazz fill them with brilliance. Volume 3 has just dropped and its the best yet, focusing on the shadowy DIY synth terrorists of late 70′s to early 80′s New York – which roughly translates to people like, Suicide, Ike Yard, Implog and Dark Day:

Dark Day – Nudes In The Forest

R.L.Crutchfield deals in horror, horror in black spiky shapes and crushing silent cobalt grey static. ‘Nudes In The Forest’ originates from the 1982 ‘Window’ LP and features a grisly little Suspiria style chime throughout, cutting in and out of the analogue parps that are pitched just at the right height to scrape at your bones. Couldn’t tell you what the fuck he’s going on about though, check it:

“Two girls took to the bicycles, they went to see the snowman with dark Alice and a drunk kitten.”

Dark Alice sounds kind of fun, especially with the lure of actually meeting a drunk kitten that can construct a snowman, and its this coupled with the paranoid slow 80′s electronic aural equivalent of a passage from JG Ballard’s ‘The Atrocity Exhibition’ (page 137 ‘Ypres Reunion’ I think) that makes this, fuck, the best song ever! No wait I can think of others, well for a minute it was right up there at the top anyway…maybe he says drum kitten, wow even better!

Sparsely-lit android sex sirens, club scene extras from both Liquid Sky and Purple Rain, are represented too – Snatch, UT, Dominatrix and Judy Nylon:

Judy proves the death of obscene hip-swivelling lip-curled lothario Elvis by employing his zombified corpse on the rhythm section for this schlock horror hillbilly cover. Female Friday The 13th victims are resurrected for backing vocals and we have an evil 50′s troupe that have blasted through time and scpace to underground 80′s New York.

Also, check out Judy’s biography, there are unsubstantiated claims that she helped invent Brian Eno’s form of ambience, woah.
