Childhood traumas

It’s complicated being me.

When I was a wee chap my dad threw me around the swimming pool too much so I ended up becoming a bore and a dullard, I hate unexpected things happening, except on the stereo.

What’s with Hella? They went from being the gentleman’s choice for polirhythmic math-rock (say it 10 times in a row and see Jesus) to storming drums (CD 1) and synths (CD 2) overlords to heavy duty psyche motherfuckers to purveyors of accoustic symphoniettas to right on ecstatic minimal free jazz punk rock dudes, which is kind of an insane synthesis of all of the above, or their forthcoming There’s no 666 in Outer Space album, natch, you gotta love them for it! And released by Ipecac too, remember, Mike Patton is our GOD, and Wolfmother are fucking shit heh.

Hella- Hand that Rocks the Cradle

Speed Spider (Jerusalem!) drums, symphonic synths and white boy gospel come together in a supernova of acid noise that sounds like Lightning Bolt having an epileptic p-funk seizure, if you think you can dance to this, please record whatever and put it on YouTube, we’d love to have a peek.

When I was a wee chap I went to Ireland on holidays with my family. My dad insisted on playing celtic music while driving from Kilarney to Dublin and back, and for some reason I ended up associating the sounds of this millenary artform with intense feelings of spiritual dread and angish. Yep, I hate it, but there are exceptions.

Ghost- Caledonia

Ghost blew us away baaaad in 2004 with one of the best prog records of the decade, the ravishing ‘Hypnotic Underworld’, and now they’re back, in Drag City, with ‘In Stormy Nights’, another exhilarating journey into the past of savage lands, of which their cover of Cromagnon’s Caledonia, an epic drone made of wind and dark clouds and grey grass, or Boredoms loping off heads left and right with a claymore, is my personal highlight.

######

This Friday at the Do- Shimmy Rivers and and Canal or one of the best bands in the country right now, psychotic post-punk no wave boogie, perhaps Mark E. Smith vs The Contortions yeh yeh but better yeh.

Supporting, Les Enfants or beautiful guitar drones & vocal echoes in transition between here and there (which is where? somewhere fancy, just check out ‘Danielle’ in his myspace, you can download it and stuff).
