20jazzfunkgreats talks about no rules pt. 6

Featuring:

You know how music is a form of expression, it’s just this thing people do and there’s no reason for it, humming when you’re alone is music in its purest form.

Yelling when someone steps on your foot can be music, at least the way Punk did it. There you have a reason.

Then there’s all these structures and genres that have emerged historically, and they have been shaped by many things, not only artistic but also social, commercial and of course technologic. You can make music fit inside them, conform to certain rules, it can be good, you know, discipline and all that. Also, once you create archetypes and standards, a common language that people out there can share and understand, hey, you got an audience. And perhaps a market. I’m not saying this is bad. I like good pop as much as the next guy.

Enter Yeborobo

Yeborobo make Rock and Roll like those rules had never been invented, in an exercise which is the opposite of deconstruction, perhaps reconstruction but it’s not clear of What, at least for now.

Their language goes back to some wild lost forest of the subconscious, where images, sounds and symbols become fuzzy concepts, the mist fades away, the What is the spirit, that’s why I say Rock and Roll, which is supposed to be, above all, about energy, youth (not age) and enthusiasm (directed up or down, to hell with Death Metal), not solipsistic but communicative in the rawest of ways. And whatever there is to find in that forest, that spirit which is not bound, well, Yeborobo have it, and whenever I see them play it bursts with a joy which blinds me the way only a truth of the guts, of the five senses, can do.

Yeborobo- Awkward Station Awkward Circus

This is in that exquisite Caff/Lick comp we told you about some time ago.

Yeborobo will be playing with Shimmy Rivers and and Canal and Neither do I TONIGHT at the Mentalist Association showcase presented by Toy Pirate, Old Blue Last from 8.00PM, isn’t that a nice poster? Do Djs including a timid 20jazzfunk dude will be playing a couple of records between the bands together with Nasty McQuaid.

Another band who display extreme proficiency in the art of destabilising structures through TOTAL ENERGY ATTACK are DMonstrations. I was very excited when I managed to find a copy of their Night Terror, Shock! fancy picture disc at Edgeworld last saturday, it being one of last year’s pinnacles of spazz punking the funk, as it were.

Well, in their double 7” split (niiice) with Aids Wolf, Crack & Ultra Eczema and Pre, released by our favouritest Lovepump United they continue down the path of imprevisible excess with four scorching tunes that sound like the big bad wolf throwing up little red riding hood and her grandma’s half-digested remains against a brick wall, you can swear by God they stick homey.

Dmonstrations- Aorta

I can’t wait to see these guys playing live, hopefully at the Do.

Also included in that release is this stab in the eye by french acid punks Crack & Ultra Eczema, which is as accurate a description of the band’s sound as you’re ever going to hear.

Crack Und Ultraeczema- Ebola Day

Or one of those hyperkinetic psychic warfare post-punk anthems for misaligned yutte you might have been missing from das greats lately, well, there you go kid, the toxic kitten has come back home, and it wants to scratch your face to the bone.

I was gonna pick a mop, flip flop, and clean all this arterial mess, but before retreating, retreating, the most familiar, I thought I’d say something about Times New Viking’s (das myspace) absolutely lovely album, Pasley Rich, which has hit me with the good times drinking cheap wine and watching the sun set real ultimate power of good lo-fi american indie rock recorded at the wrong side of the tracks… It cracks crashes and rolls with the dusty fuzzy power of Royal Trux at their murdered ballad best, and bristles with enough chaotic feral sexy lovely energy to make Jad & David proud (and horny), we already got a soundtrack for this summer’s hormonal overhaul and it’s only January, thanks for keeping us warm viking kids.

Times New Viking- Teenage Lust!

Pasley Rich is coming out in May in Siltbreeze records.

Order it now and go and check the Alien’s brilliant podcast at our soul brothers Allez Allez
