I bet that Buck Rogers looks good on the Dancefloor

Unearthing long forgotten gems is so fun because it makes you look well cool! You can be all like “yeah, I found this, check me out! I’m the only one who has it, yeah?“.
No, of course I am being sarcastic, we don’t care for that nonsense, we leave that shit to the Nathan Barleys of this sorry world.
Equip- XXXO (Manchester England 1983)
Released last year on limited one sided vinyl that most record players won’t play - fuck, are they TRYING to make people not buy this? If you bought it, you shall receive ten cool points and the password to the next level, a first-person shoot-em-up where you have to fire cool pre-release white label records from your old skool sticker-covered record box at hipsters in a London basement club. If you then hit 10 asymetrical haircuts in a row you progress to the bonus level - hosting your own clubnite in Shoreditch, wow, you’ve made it!
This is a track that never made the final 12″ that was ‘UK Electro’ on Street Sounds back in 1984. Produced by DJ Greg Wilson, with help from members of Magazine and A Certain Ratio. Its not that much of a surprise that it didn’t make it onto an electro compilation, as its way more smooth chrome Moroder italo than anything else. Maybe it should have been played at 33 and put on this instead.
The general vibe is that this was way beyond forward thinking, with its 4/4 kick drum marathon and Chicago house piano lines but, well, Italo was way more future-minded than house IMO. What were they dancing to in Buck Rogers, huh? It wasn’t Larry Levan, I can tell you! Don’t get me wrong either, all this piss taking tomfoolery doesn’t detract away from the fact that this ticks all the Italo-banger boxes.
Speaking of which…
Yay! New Emperor Machine! The 6 part Vertical Tones 12″ set is now complete, and looks pretty as a nice 6×12″ set spread out on the bedroom floor with luscious artwork by La Boca.
The Emperor Machine - Labocatocs (Vincent Markowski’s Polski Re-Rub)
Here we have a track exclusive to the 12″ releases, ‘Labocatocs’, which fellow DC Recordings astronaut Vincent Markowski has remixed.
The general space vibe that all Emperor Machine output has is still firmly in place but the spirit of DFA and even Timbaland is there too with clattering cowbell and chaotic percussion thats only hinted at in the original, layered over space phasers and stuttering hoover sounds. Aww, with this kind of sound we are in italo-space opera heaven, like an episode of Bucky O Hare if it was well dark anime vs Sin City style.
