Bernard Fevre is loved by 20JFG for his stellar work as Black Devil Disco Club where he conjures satanic black-light shimmering disco from his wizard-like fingers. But his solo work takes a different route, minimal and delicate sounds not music to dance with the devil in the pale moomlight to. 20JFG faves Quiet Village have remix duties on an upcoming 12″ entitled “Black Sunshine”, as do Elitechnique and In Flagranti.

‘Pendulum’ comes from “The Strange World of Bernard Fevre”, and is this delicate plodding Carpenter-from-Venus sound, otherworldy bleeps frozen binary-like messages from the Moon over a melodic padded, thump then it gets all wobbly for the “chorus”. ‘Fantasm’ follows the same galactic path, but with more out-there sounds, echoes from space-caves and dead nebullas with a spaceship-landing pulse.

In a similar menacing analogue shade, John Bender creates dark moods with minimal use of force. In the same way that Suicide, on the original demos (released with the 2nd album’s reissue), sounded like they could ooze forth from within your stereo speakers and cut you up real good, John Bender has a creeping banevolence that kills with sound only.

‘Knuckles’ is taken from the “Plaster Falling” LP and seems to be a tale of love lost through violent means put to the sound of Nitzer Ebb if they were a church choir. John Bender’s vocals are so deadpan and detached its as if he’s reading a passage from JG Ballard’s “Crash” from the centre of a K-hole.

Miserablism never sounded so good.
