Springwatch

Spring is in the air and its a good time for all of us.

The spirit of Herne is running in the woods again, new life is being brought into the world and our nights are no longer so dark.

Festivities are beginning all around as the world awakes.

Along side rain, Morris Dancing, Real Ale and Wicker Men is the grand old English tradition of the Dog Shows, of which we will be attending many this year.

Along with the explosion in bloom, is an explosion of music from our lovely little Brighton band scene, with the likes of Shrag, Fujiya and Miyagi, Coin-op and Miss Pain all out and about on tour and finally getting the attention they deserve.

Anyone who has witnessed local lo-fi heroes Peepholes joyously enthusiastic live shows will have been won over by their statically charged air full of charm and chaos. Half finished bolts of tunes are discharged into the either with a lack of regard for conventions of traditional indie. To hold them in would be inconceivable.

It is almost as much fun to watch the slack jawed young girls at Peepholes gigs as the band. Nicks trying hard to concentrate and not smile, soon overtaken by the realisation that keeping in time or tune is not the most important part of the music. Kat’s mesmerising start as a nervous fledgling, your fingers are crossed for her, in her eyes the fear its all going to fall apart any second. Peepholes transform with the joy of their own noise into a barely contained full on muppet show animal storm, your caught in the maelstrom with them, and it brings a warm glow to your heart. Resistance is, erm, futile.

With their first flutter out of the nest Peepholes have provided us with an ode to the four legged friend. Hoop jumping, walking on all fours, any man’s scruffy best friend.

Peepholes - Dogshow

Woof! WOof! Woof! woof! wOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooffffff!!!

ahh - that felt good.

Peepholesare about to release into the spring air their new cd - with a wonderful personalised cover - which you can ask them nicely for from their Myspace site.

Why has no one made the One Man And His Dog first person round ‘em up yet? Whistle command, play the dog, owner or sheep. Any canine and wooley one fan game engine programmers out there? Now is your time!

From one of Peepholes favorite compilations on Mum and Dad’s Industrial Records (god bless Monte Cazazza) comes the naive charm of Dorothy’s I Confess.

As a b-side baby blog we love the analogue Anglophile Jenny Agutter school girl vocals of Softness. A true inspiration to electro pop, that doesn’t need a 4/4 beat to make you dance, Softness feels as fresh and new today as it did 20 years ago. That’s some good Oil of Olay.

Dorothy - Softness

For a real rundown on the history of this single you can check our informed brother in the struggle kidshirt’s worldly wisdom filled posts here and here.

We stole the signed cover.

Like the younger sister of Add N to X, Softness’s spring drop sounds should be on every keyboard demo. Breathlessly hypnotic, there is a familiarity to Softness as if it’s always been with you.

If Chris and Cosey’s love song is for October when the coldness settles in, Softness is a dawn chorus for our 20jfg spring.
