Good times: Sam’s tips.

There are many good things about these three years of 20JFG psychedelic nerd adventures down the crazy spiral, one of which is having met so many good & inspiring people. A few have even put aside some time of their busy schedules to write for us, and we thank them for it, they are the 20JFG illuminati and they rule, power commandoes for the underground takeover…you know, people like Lord Nuneaton Savage, Massimo, Genuine Guy, Robin, James Nascent, Astroman, Sam Wander, Hugo…Today we welcome inside the messy & warm belly of the beast one Sam Deven Miles of Allez Allez, Dusty Cabinets and ‘100% good guy’ fame, he’s a Euro-electronica savant (organising London’s Kompakt parties for a reason, boyo) and that’s what he is bringing you, check out these tunes because they be burnin’, thanks xxxx10 Sam, & LOVE!

First up on the geiger counter we have Sleeparchive. Despite looking like the sort of man that your geography teacher would guffaw at for being ridiculously uncool, Roger Semsroth is a purveyor of thick, hissing 4-D grooves that sound like they’re constructed entirely of microscopic right-angles. Employing delay units the size of a portakabin, ‘dusty galaxies’ is a jacking tidal wave of skronk that you can imagine Black Dice making if they laid off the acid long enough to find their way to the dance floor. Sit back, relax and don’t wait for the chorus, cos boy, it ain’t coming…

Debonair Swiss/Chilean national Lucien Nicolet AKA Luciano is the poster boy of minimal (Han Solo to Sven Vath’s Darth Vader). Don’t let that put you off however, as he’s also responsible for some of the most sublime, provocative techno of recent years. 2003’s ‘Orange Mistake’ the debut release on his own Cadenza imprint (co- created with fellow Swiss Quenum) is one of the most important releases in recent years, a sleek, mesmerising monolith of oily bass grooves, flecked with skittering, scrunching percussion, slashing claps and drunken, off kilter organ.

James Holden (not forgetting his ace Border Community imprint) is widely credited as being one of the most innovative electronic artists around today. Having remixed the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, New Order and Depeche Mode, as well as creating one of last years already seminal (and worryingly, yet accurately titled) mini album ‘The Idiots Are Winning’), it’s his remix of Andre Kraml’s ‘Safari’ that is the subject of discussion today. The original track is a sweet, woozy disco torch song that shuffles along pleasantly enough - Holden grabs his digital sledge hammer and smashes the original to bits - cutting and pasting it into an acid battered monster. the shuddering drum track wheezes along, threatening to fall apart at any moment, booty twisting groove so tight and booty shaking (20JFG fave Green Velvet gave it the Chicago seal of approval by licensed it up for his recent Ministry comp) and a blindingly irridescent breakdown that should melt your head into multi coloured sludge until next time reader…
