Blue Sky research

Sorry for spreading all those naughty rumours about the death of Balearic stuff. It was a lie. Summer is upon us with its unforgiving gaze and, by raising our body temperature, music such as Hannulelauri’s ‘Metropol’ helps us keep going, albeit slow like lizards crawling across the crystal expanses of the planet closest to an imploding star. I guess our idle accusations stemmed from a certain degree of deja vu in many of the outputs of the cosmic disco massive, you know, boilerplate mid tempo beats and a whiff of nostalgia for the too-oft-remembered mediterranean 80s. But hey, when someone gets it right, we feel our organisms align with the environment surrounding us, and long wistful for the sun to set, and dawn again immediately so we can revel on a rainbow of colours of extraterrestrial beauty as fiery photons stroke the terse skin of the atmosphere like merry revellers arriving home to their significant others after a night of smokes and wine.

Erik Wikström is more on the side of lush abstract disco, but does the job too. Our friends at No Talent’s Clowns say that this was released in super-limited vinyl some time ago, and didn’t receive the attention it deserved. Word kid, we are the masters of the pastel sound matrix (cough cough, yeah, whatever) and hadn’t heard of it, how fucking come? Anyway, it’s never too late when the sounds are sweet, so here you have it in all its sunkissed glory- imagine Chic’s prettiest cough syrup reverie, or Ennio Morricone’s favourite music box re-engineered by a crack team of emotional physicists  and you aren’t there, you are in heaven dancing with enigmatic shapes made of the same stuff that the space between constellations and unremembered dreams are made of, it’s a good place to be, you’ll have to give me that.

As a bonus, here you have the video for Chemise, one song included in Sorcerer’s new album, ‘Neon Leon’, which will be released in August by Tirk. ‘Digital space dancing and cosmic surprises’? We are so there.

The cute images of Soviet space exploration matchboxes (!!!) above were taken from Sci-Fi-O-Rama. Thanks to Linda for the tip!
