A Breathing That Comes From A Direction With No Name

20jazzfunkgreats’ LA reporter Brian Miller is back with another savoury post. I am absolutely loving the Mincemeat or Tenspeed ‘Green Velvet piercing Genesis P-Orridge’s face with poison switchblades’, but then how would I not? Let it all kick off.

uphillgardners

After spending most of the past 15 years in and around California, there are more sadly forgotten bands in my memory than ones that saw their due. Thank Allah for the reissue though! In the mid 90s, when I first started going to shows around LA, the strangest local band was Uphill Gardners.

Members of this band would go on to be in Young People, Liars, Best Coast, Pocahaunted, and countless more. Uphill Gardners; rumored to be a no-wave satire band, but ultimately just broke the sound barrier and the silence barrier all at once. Or was that sound bario? Not sure. In any case, the label run by The Smell proprietor Jim Smith, olFactory Records, is releasing an Uphill Gardners rarity album, and just to show you how serious everyone involved with this project is, lets take a listen to:

Meanwhile, back in the present, deep in a hole, lost in a bodysized cavity between the earth and complete peril, is bastard sound birthed by techno and noise that neither wished to keep. After raising itself on grubs and stalactite drippings, this milky-skinned creature emerged at sunset and surprised society by being a model citizen and true gentleman. May the beasts walk among us and teach us a thing or two!

This one, known as Mincemeat or Tenspeed, hails from Philadelphia and is about to drop a new full length called Strange Gods on Zum.

For the religious minded, you will be happy to know that keeper of the faith and emergent “I really thought the cyber-punk dream would never come true, but then it did, just many years after the media cared” messiah Nero’s Day At Disneyland not only does his solo thing, twisting garbage dumb keyboards to his will, but he also gives himself and that feirce lo-fi digital sound to a punk band from SF called Strip Mall Seizures. The inclusion of more people playing with Mr. Nero? More better.

Strip Mall Seizures- Human Moment

Dear friend and drummer for Sword Heaven (America’s greatest metal band; on Load Records), Aaron Hibbs, has expanded his efforts towards
being the most amazing person alive. This time through the ancient art of hula hooping! He is currently on day 2 of an attempt to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for longest time hula hooping. His goal? 120 hours!!! Being done all in official capacity, with round the clock nurses and witnesses on hand, you can watch him obtain this amazing goal on a live stream at:

Anywhere you can help repost this link would be appreciated! The support of well-wishers can help him stay strong and awake!!

Thank you!

  1. sadly, aaron’s attempt at the record fell short. he dropped the hoop at 59 hours and 59 minutes. 72 hours is still the current record, set in 1987 I believe. he will be trying again soon though!

  2. That Strip Mall Seizures song is slow erasure through bass, drums, and field recordings of the monster’s grinding teeth (a.k.a. glorious keyboard sound).
