It’s back to the rain slick streets of future garage once more. Those crumbling Victorian buildings giving up their neon secrets as we pass. Over a century of water pouring over their environs. Bass notes rising up from the harbour depths in concert with the glittering blimps above, carrying the sinister advertising for ‘a new life in the off world colonies’. Clouds illuminated by the laser guided whim of orbital A.I.s, driven mad by the demands of their inbred aristocratic masters. Alone amongst the technological anachronisms – down there on the ground – it all falls away for a moment until you miss it. Just the bass. Then the glistening world extracts its celestial revenge.
20JFG loves the future.
Bristol based Hyetal joins forces with Hertfordshire resident Shortstuff to bring us the wonderful Ice Cream out now on Punch Drunk. Both this and the flip Don’t Slip are glorious odes to the joy of the synth line. Leading the way through a lubricated world of dub in a way purpose built to slide through any facade of dancefloor cynicism these melodies mug IDM-era Warp on the way. In a good way. You understand.
Hyetal & Shortstuff – Ice Cream

Mournful triplets ring out from the moment we awake back in the last great age of Garage. Their midi string herald signalling our return to a time of limitless potential soon to be subjugated under the yoke or exponential expectation and the British propensity to class anything that doesn’t involve dominating two thirds of the world as failure. It lies in wait now, its time will come. Clashing drums form their bedrock until the the sliding bass comes and relieves the tension, plunging us deep into our crypto nostalgia. Rim shots flung out in an eight armed assault while we’re distracted by that infectious, synthetic, set of strings. Pummelling. In a good way. You understand.
This is one of many version of Triplets by Sticky. Owning Triplets I, II & III and having heard the version on his Man On The TV 12″ we can confirm that it’s not any of those (although definitely a Triplets). If any of our knowledgeable readers care to ID the track we’d be extremely grateful as this, quite frankly, is wonderful. In our fever dreams Metronomy based their early career around this record although given its unknown providence it could be a 2009 refix by the man himself. Confusion abounds and it’s rather nice that way.
