Because the garish flame of anthemic 80s pop will keep burning strong as ever when the hipsters in the know move on to the new cool thing (or have they already, I don’t have a clue), let us celebrate but a couple of wiz kids of the brilliant new wave of nostalgia tinged synthetic revenge moves, avanti!

Having shaken the floor silly with blinding releases in Italians do it Better and Eskimo, Bottin comes back with the 12 sampler of a horror themed album for Bear Funk, this is not very scary, but then what is Phenomena about, a girl who talks with insects teaming up with Donald Pleasance to chase a defomed midget which is eventually hacked to death by a vengeful monkey? Cue Iron Maiden to soundtrack a funeral? Not an ounce of irony on sight? Dario Argento must have some weird dreams indeed, and we love him for that. Horror Disco album succeeds in the same way, as an epic 80s synth bubblegum disco extravaganza for the freaks to swing, gnarly butcher knives swinging in the air as the tomato sauce splatters all over the glitterball, best party you ever attended, standard.

Bottin- Disco for the Devil

Sally Shapiro’s music is a shy supernova of pure and ethereal light which doesn’t blind but glows there in front of you like the pages of the Neverending Story upon first being opened, it doesn’t expand to engulf you but draws you inside a luminous scene of 80s stylish cinematography and pastel warmth, constellations of silver stars which are smooth pearls which are perfect teeth of a smile forming as eyes follow breathless the spiral of scribblings of a scented love letter, in her new single ‘Miracle‘ she mesmerises you into a state of delighted trance with wave after wave of emotions turned into perfect pop music, ravishing strings bringing it to a conclusion which deserves crimson curtains and a subdued tear.

We have the best tunes, man. And the best images, thank Tommy Boy for that.

The gentle folks at Six Degrees Records have sent us one piece of balearic heaven, or an advance from their upcoming release by some people called Pacifika, as remixed by those magicians Quiet Village. Go on holidays somewhere warm and sunny and placid and far away from the regular bustle most of us find ourselves engulfed by, go to sleep with the windows open, awake in the morning and open your eyes to the healing light, watch the dust dance its dance in the air, riding invisible currents which could well be taut lines in a guitar, this is the music they play and you will hear if all is well, like it should be.

Pacifika- Sweet (Quiet Village remix)

Soft Rocks are awesome, they specialise in weird psychedelic percussive edits full of mystery and suggestion, the kind of music you want to soundtrack the first steps you take inside the misty spaces of a night-club all blurry silhouettes under a deluge of orange and red, and of course, the black shadows and whatever hides in them. Slowdown is a flight of hypnotic guitar fancy drawing shapes around the camp-fire of an Anatolian western shot by Ennio Morricone, or a page stolen from the Manuscript found in Saragossa swirling under the perfumed wings of a mischievous Djinn, beautiful thrills indeed.

Bumrocks have been inundating the world with class for quite a long time, we are total fans and proud owners of their El Bum cornucopia of weird gems, custom-made adaptations and bizarre delights. This includes the mysterious ‘Ask Tekken’, a bit of pre-italo italo disco of unknown origins which blows us away with a bassline which is pure sin. We played some free association while listening to it, and the following images came to mind: Carrera glasses, ghosts of Rimini, faces smeared in lipstick, people in pastel outfits worshipping a glittering disco ball, good times which live forever in this piece of humbly immortal piece of unabashedly joyful music.
