Recently we have been delivering quite a few mixtapes into the blogosphere via this portal. This has both delighted and dismayed some of you, dear readers. The delight, we are happy to hear, is from your enjoyment of the mixtapes. The dismay is from our probably rather mean habit of making you guess the tracklist in the comments.

This post should bring you some light relief on the tracks featured in the The old dark matter whistle test mixtape from 22nd October.

Happiness is an odd thing to try and measure. Social bonds are another, but the two are related. Something people believe to pre-date religion, politics, sport and even language as a form of social bonding is the shared ceremony of dance. Rainbow Arabia obviously believe this too, and try and promote it in their tribal Moroder of Sequenced. It’s a ceremony we very much approve of.

Rainbow Arabia – Sequenced

Sequenced is from Boys and Diamonds on Kompakt records.

Minimalism has always been something we have struggled with at xxjfg. Sticking to a few sentences, a single metaphor, one style of music in a post – although we admire the concept – it is a battle we lost a long time ago in a multi-verse far far away. Pink Skull are also rather bad at this on their eclectic album Psychic Walfare. Lets take a look at Mu. It features understated funk that would make Nile shake his booty, radiophonics that would not be unwelcome on Ghost Box, and a saxaphone solo that would fit into Lost Boys – this is some undeniable broad listening taste combined into a mismatched jem. Another case of it shouldn’t work, but it does.

Pink Skull – Mu

Mu is from Psychic Welfare on RVNG INTL

We end today’s broadcast with a track from ex-flat mate of Brian Cox, xxjfg stalwart and our constant space comander Sir Robert Calvert – come on everyone, sing along!

Over the last handful of months, Mannequin records have experienced double-digit rates of growth in the impossible market exchange for hot record labels peddling beautiful and corrupted synth-wave. Having had privileged access to the fine output from Sixth June, the latest addition to Mannequin’s repertoire, your 1980s oversized spectacle wearing 20jazzfunkgreats Wail Street analyst has but one recommendation to make regarding their stock: BUY BUY BUY.

Sixth June – Back for a Day

Their Back For A Day EP is a relentless killstreak of emotional sniping across the ravaged structures of an industrial state surrounded by a psychic iron curtain that no imbalances in trade or shortfalls in productivity could ever bring down. In the title track, a sleek and stripped down italo cyborg that should make Soft Metals feel in good company, they provide an alternative soundtrack for Snake Plissken’s gliding NYC infiltration, if only his mission was not just about death and freedom, but also love.

20jazzfunkgreats don’t get any more emotionally invested on record labels than it is the case with NYC’s finest, IGETRVNG. Matt RVNG reports that they have a new Pink Skull album on the way that is ‘a fucking mind rub’. Any sceptics out there seeking for validation need but go and check out the preliminary EP, Bee Nose (Put Yr Face in), feat. the ‘Paper Rad’ reimagining of a Cthonian god boss fight micro-epic original, and remixes by the mighty Brassica and Ace of Spies.

Pink Skull – Bee Nose (Brassica Remix)

The former keeps it down-tempo and ‘carnivalesque in a Coney Island fucked up dubby way’ in his remix, which is of course happy times for the 20jazzfunkgreats fam, especially when the creepy rasta clown posse slips out from the shadows to do some weird capoeira/kabuki style satanic theatre performance of hypnotic dynamics & unfathomable semiotics.

(Sweet poster by Chris Seddon)

Brassica will be one of the features of 20jazzfunkgreats The Great Escape times at Brighton’s Green Door Store on Thursday. The cosmos will be kept from tipping into darkness by our very favourite Echo Lake. We will be skating the thin line between ying and yang with some cool records. Get down & say hi.

There are some other super bands playing at the festival, not least Gatekeeper, Laurel Halo, Mazes, Prize Pets, Planningtorock and Gang Gang Dance. We’ll be at the front row of all these shows, even if they clash, because we have awesome powers.

If you are in London on Friday, do get down to the ICA for the above, as organised by our very best comrade Ashley Marlowe.

Anthemic cosmic synth French androids Space are getting re-released and redone in a 12’’ released by Nang. The choice of the bunch is, in our honest opinion, the remix delivered by master of mist and fuzz Time and Space Machine, who transforms the original into one of the nicest homages that Cerrone ever received, full bodied percussive psychedelic disco that will make you feel like you were flying across Gandaharian alienscapes on the back of a majestic red dragon dodging sensory rays straight from the pheromone secreting glands of the deranged masterbrain. Lush.

Space- Carry on, Turn me On (The Time and Space Machine Remix)

I’m a Cliche are in top form, and Azari & III are the best thing that happened to the dancefloor since Vitalic (OK Cowboy) grafted some experimental pop spikes into the back of the euro techno beast.

After the uplifting primeval acid styles of Hungry for the Power and Reckless for your Love, She’s an Illusion keeps it pumping muscular, but from a different angle- Paranoid eurobassline, killer synth refrain and enough weird sounds to keep those who miss the electronic body antics of Smith and Hack going for a couple of months, imagine Giorgio Moroder’s pink Alfa Romeo being crushed by the jaws of an industrial grinder, crumpled metal box salvaged for sharp blades and blunt truncheons by a tribe of new romantic amazons who dwell in the red corners of the sleazedisco. Let the hunt begin.

Azari & III- She’s an Illusion

Find it included in the Hungry for the Power EP. We’ve got more I’m a Cliche stuff coming up shortly, keep your ears peeled.

And just because we are in an exalted mood, here you have the most excellent ‘Oh Monorail!’ from Pink Skull’s new album in 20JFG fave and oldest friends NYC label IGETRVNG, Endless Bummer. This is a Tigersushi style adventure, don’t get coherence get in the way of taste and feeling- some times it’s just beautiful pop peppered with esoteric references the music places you in a zone strange enough to get, and dance to as well, some others it sounds like Aphrodite’s Child following on the steps of Klaus Kinski down wild Bolivian rainforests. There’s more, and it’s always great.

Oh Monorail is more of the former, a lovely nugget of rumbling stargaze purple disco which is up there with DFA’s finest in what refers to modern updates of awesome glam music. You won’t be able to get it out of your head.
