In this post we celebrate the many savants of rhythm who look into the prism of the past, and see the future. In a year emulating the grotty and overcast economic climate of 70′s New York, where we were continually perused by a string of cosmetified gangs for a murder we did not commit, our need for the majesty of disco and her many offspring was stronger than ever. Luckily for us, as we travel a further year from the handlebar moustaches and tinted sunglasses of Italian synth genii, the bongo fueled rebellion of the loft pioneers and the lusty drum machines of Chicago, their influence appears to be as undiminished as ever.

However, it seems the surrounding wistful revivalism has already begun to move on and retreat. The need is there, but the hyper-deflated concentration of ‘tastemakers’ has again flicked the grand musical randomiser and thundered off. As the tide retreats and Juno’s weekly ‘Disco’ email list gets thinner, we’re left with rare gems embedded in the sand. The sounds of Chicago beckoning our nascent Knuckles. Indeed, it was a bunch of those meddling ‘indie kids’ that brought Jamie Principle back to teenagers dancefloors this year (but that’s for another post).

Thankfully, we still have those that care sticking around, those that never left (which Italo revival are we on now?) and those that never cared much for email lists, record store dividers or iTunes genre tags. Time then, to climb aboard the enduring arpeggiation of our peers, and let it take us on a journey through the ecstatic syncopation explorations of 09.

Acid Washed – General Motors, Detroit, America – Frankie Knuckles found out where I live, if only I can reach the light switch in time.

Sorcerer – Chemise (Neon Lenon) – On constant rotation in the 20jfg jacuzzi room whilst we platonically scrub each others backs.

From Disco to House with the click of a mouse, whilst the production rate of original tracks seemed to falter somewhat, picking a re-edit from 09 is something akin to selecting the favourite molecule in your body. We don’t dare tell you where ours is, only that we called him Goliath. Back in summer, whilst we were coolin’ out in the blood filled hot-tub with our reptilian honeyz, Ze Records unleashed a selection of reassemblages old and new from their vaults. Most were of the highest order, so for those of you out there trapped in the frosty void, with the delerium of summer a faded half-concept that you cannot attribute to memory or imagination, we present an assurance that it was in fact, real.

Gichy Dans Beachwood no 9 – On a Day Like Today (Todd Terje friendly children edit)

As is traditional, Todd amputates the songsmithery of the original to reveal a delightful refrain of innocents. They circle you, hands held, whilst the pagan lord lights the tinder piled at your feet, to incite a most rapturous of combustions.

Terminal Twilight are so happening. Snow swirls outside the windows of the 20JFG demesne as the crystal fractals of ‘The Lovers’ begin to spread their own special brand of frosty magic all across the lounge. This is sparse soulful minimalism at its lethargic best, up there with the sweet android power ballads of our Italian comrades- think Chris and Cosey on a walkabout across strange rooms shrouded in layer after layer of scented mist, past which a confederation of strange shadows lurk- desires, questions, the id of the princess trapped in the heights of an ivory tower rising over the smog of orange LA vistas, this is a tunnel connecting it all, get strutting.

Terminal Twilight- The Lovers

The Terminal Twilight 12” is coming out on the 18th of January. You can pre-order it here.

Deliberately omitted from the list above so we could write some extended gush in the space below are Pink Stallone. These purveyors of the loose wowed us in 09, and although the ‘hotly tipped’ label is both gift and curse, we received subconcious transmissions from the dancefloors of ’010 telling us they were aching for their future wax. The memory of the aggregator is already nearing capacity with their data, so we push for joyous overload with exclusive mix.

Pink Stallone – 20jfg Mixtape

Recorded live at the reception of our unholy union to the cold blooded chicks of the summer, we lost the scroll containing the tracklist after a scuffle broke out between one of us and a rather unconvincing man in a lizard costume, who turned up claiming to be one of their husbands. We don’t have to tell you who won, cus our scalez is real. The scroll has been fedexed to us so if you’re hungry for the knowledge check back on this post in a few days.

————————

Something that will not be continuing in ’010 is the covert operations of Dissident Records. Their vinyl-only idealism brought us a myriad of vintage dance activists including Gatto Fritto, Ali Renault and Casionova amongst others. But sadly there’s little means to facilitate the more wanton aspects of human nature in ideal ideologies. As such, their purity of vision in a zero attention-span digital world may well have spelled their demise.

Let’s strut for a trip down memory lane on how this awesome label fed into the hallucinations of 20jazzfunkgreats, in case you didn’t catch them the first time around. Listen, shed a tear, crack your knuckles and follow their example. And go to Juno and scope the vinyl, because it has a price, but it’s priceless:

We pay our respects to the dearly departed, and wish our man Andy Blake the best of luck with his future projects.
So they say they plan to kill it in 2010, I say, you have been killing since day 1. It’s Pink Stallone, who have got together with 80s garage house singer Joey Washington for the next release, out in the new year. Here you have a track that won’t be included in that single: special stuff, you’ll agree. Basically, what you get is the Stallone’s lovely ‘spin in the pastel dancefloor in a most abandoned way’ ace glitz boogie antics, including a creeping bassline which is pure stripped down android p-funk sleaze plus a nice ‘n’ smooth vocal performance from Mr. Washington. Synthetic stabs for much power padded pink blazer slow mo strutting down the pink pit which is where all joy is to be found if you shake low enough. Now do it.

Pink Stallone- Hydroplanes (Joey Washington Edit)

And just to keep things pumping, here you have one by the one and only Dave Liteyear under the guise ‘Children of the Space Age’. He has sent me some stuff he did some time ago because he has decided that his career in the music biz didn’t have much future, so people might as well listen to it from this place. Record label dudes, you need to address this situation and bring Dave back, because this is one of the sweetest edits we have listened for a long time (and his solos stuff rocks too).

And what do we have here? We have a postcard from the streets of NYC circa 1982, rough Freestyle antics for you to throw your hands in the hair, robotic drone which advances reckless for our love in a smooth crescendo which comes across like Delia and Gavin’s Rise if it had been remixed by John Rocca instead of DFA. This song covers your face with kisses and sends you spinning into vogue heaven. Crazy shit.

In it’s original incarnation “Die Slow” is an epic blast of serrated tekno shards that rip through neo industrial noise light fields with maximum metallic grind. A truly take no prisoners proposition. In the silvery hands of those awesome New Jersey italo exorcists, Pink Stallone, what was once blunt and brutal, a futuristic monolith coated in glittering grime is now transformed and remoulded into a golden Moroderesque orb floating through elysian pastures haunted by the elegiac androgynous tones of Jake Duzsik echoing from high above pastel cumulonibus clouds that burst with tearjerking balearic bliss-disco droplets.

HEALTH – Die Slow (Pink Stallone Remix)

For those of you who happen to dwell in New York City, HEALTH will be playing a show at the Bowery Ballroom with the mindmelting support of Pictureplane and Tanlines. Needless to say this particular XXJFG brother will be in attendance waiting for his eardrums to be ritually shredded in the best possible way.

Still stuck in NYC, XXJFG has teamed up with our eternal mancrush over at True Panther (FYI – pick up the kila new Girl’s album which came out yesterday) to bring you Society which commences next Tuesday at Arrow Bar in Manhattan. DJ Kingdom, the ddarkk bass lord and overall walking, robo-diva fever dream will be DJing a slot which will undoubtedly inspire some broken bones. We also have Brooklyn based 2-piece Blondes playing live, the idea of which has me foaming at the mouth, such is the tru magik of their music. Don’t believe me? Then drown yourself in the majesty of “Moondance”, a mindblowing experience which is akin to sitting solitarily atop a giant hill that overlooks a neon splashed future metropolis immersed in otherwordly baby blue mists, and watching as those holographic skyscraping structures crumble into undulating waves of pixeldust before your very eyes.

Blondes – Moondance

Finally we’re more than a little bit psyched to present to you this epic new mix that was put together especially for yours truly by those modern day purveyors of sublime Kevin Saunderson style ghost-rave and the creators of one of this year’s stone cold future classics, Azari & III. It’s a kaleidoscopic acid fantasia. N-Joy.

The initial breakdown of this Marina and the Diamonds’ remix circa 2.15 might well be the most beautiful thing that Pink Stallone have come up with yet, and God knows they have been good kids and true purveyors of blissful 80s tinged top-class ‘dance with your make-up smudged by tears’ music since they came inside our radar less than a year ago. You can enjoy it at quite a few levels, right now as I write this I am revelling in the minutiae of little details accumulating in the background, pleasure sighs from electronic devices squeezed by loving hands which set the pastel-coloured scenario for yet another demonstration of greatness. These kids definitely got the right stuff.

Let’s check what we have like we were John Rambo’s loving nemesis- trademark Cowley locomotion hi-energy styles, uplifting chorus re: that utopian discotheque where luminescent reflections in the glitter ball breed dancefloor stars swirling down below in a ground fertile soil for weird and beautiful flowers, and to top it all a killer collection of apoplexy inducing air-keytar riffs, which at 3.20 reach ecstatic heights not far below those of Do You Want to Dance with Me’s glorious coda. We have all we need it seems, let’s do it.

If you didn’t know this one then I am happy to introduce it to you, as Stuart did to me in the shape of a dog-eared 7” with suitably cheesy artwork (regretfully not the one with the cat driving a car, but hey, you can’t have it all). Doctor’s Cat’s ‘Watch Out’ is a definitive italo hit, mythical theme tune for a gang of gay bravos to engage in some proper dancefloor hustling in the oversaturated celluloid of an imagined Warriors Z-series rip-off, and perfect soundtrack for a bout of hedonistic shadowboxing that will help you overcome all adversities.

Epic post! Epic because Love is Disco, and Disco is the one genre that has united all 4 horsemen of 20JFG in agreement that 2008 was an awesome year for said musical style. Disco hit hard this year with Chicago House making a welcome return to the forefront of dance music and the act of editing old classics becoming the done thing with an army of bedroom/basement club producers.

Eskimo continued the discopic onslaught across the sand dunes of parallel universes with Peter Visti’s balearic vibes casting swirling green shadows through abandoned towns and Low Motion Disco’s music soundtracking the creation of new species in the murky depths. The label also brought us the phenomenon of Aeroplane who remixed a host of artists to great success, even getting to work the magic on Grace Jones. But it was with Kathy Diamond on the “Whispers” 12″ that they managed to channel the finesse of “I Feel Love” with the spirit of malevolent ’80s soul from Shakatak and Thelma Houston.

Maelstrom – Valdresfjellet

Skinny Joey compiled the sounds of space on the “Cosmic Balearic Beats” collection which featured Maelstrom. “Valdresfjellet” is taken from the “Assynt” 12″, with beats that map out the complex placement of pistons and cogs on a robot holding a cowbell.

In Flagranti’s Codek label continued its output of wonky synth-wiggle electro(not electro) under various disguises on the excellent “Sounds Superb” series, plus neurotic psy-funk spearheading to the vanishing point on a speedball on the “Firmly Planted Memories” 12″. Oblio bought to life the images depicted on ’70s edition Philip K. Dick novels, slow motion laser beam volleys across the irradiated royal blue of alien vistas, as heard on “The Crux Of The Matter” 12″. In Flagranti themselves made discos slippery when wet with the dirty-mac-perv flasher chic of the “Sexx Piss Tool” 12″, complete with shimmying ’70s porn starlet beats heard pumping out of decadent Parisian penthouse parties, and the torrid moans of sexaroid vocoders in silk-sheet trysts:

In Flagranti – I Chatted Up The Nympho Secretary Part 1

The edits came thick and fast, so it was difficult to sift through them to pick out the nuggets of gold from the grains of sand. Glossy didn’t disappoint in three separate vinyl discs, polishing unknown tracks into streamlined sensations with Vaseline on the lens and cocktail cigarette smoke hanging in the air, casting a fuzzy haze across perfect cheekbones – the aural equivalent of ’80s Vogue Magazine photoshoots.

Glossy – Burning Love

The Ambassador’s Reception took things to a psychotropic level with Tako’s “My Kind of Woman” 12″ filled with sci-fi fear and drama, empty galaxies of unseen evil forces and synthesised bleeps creating constellation in the cosmos that marked the entrance to cross-dimensional robo-raves in the year 3000. Loud E delivered a 12″ tri-force of hypnotic downbeat disco. Hear how “Drums Dutour II” off of the most recent disc spins a cheap grindhouse movie plot of mechanical zombies chasing a female TV reporter and her unlikely partner of a strapping offshore fisherman through the misty woods of a deserted island off the coast of Italy:

Loud E – Drums Dutour II

Messalina’s awesomeness should not be gauged by the number of Myspace friends they have (five), but by the sound of this throbbingly propulsive edit of “Westway” by prog-rock outfit Sky. If The Warriors had just kicked back and chased the dragon instead of making their perilous way across an increasingly hostile New York, the Baseball Furies would have materialised from slow motion energy columns before their cloudy eyes and beaten them to a glittery pulp with giant quaaludes, and Barry de Vorzon would have beaten Lucci Capri to this beat:

Lucci Capri – Sky Way

Other credible edits gracing pristine turntables came from Moxie who’s reworkings soundtracked gay porn remakes of Buck Rogers and Knight Rider, and drug fuelled dream orgies that inexplicably ran parallel to the plot of V with horses in need of chiropractors taking the place of the alien lizards. The dukes of noirdisco, Lovefingers, began a project entitled Black Disco with cohorts Nitedog and Lee Douglas where disco classics received a Halloween makeover to invoke demons in mirrorball capes and leotards. The RVNG of the NRDS series enlisted Wade Nichols and Jacques Renault to commit the four elements of disco to humble circular wax, Renault preciously reflecting off the floor of Studio 54, Nichols cow herding with a Cadillac. Stalwarts of class Permanent Vacation kept showering us with silver raindrops of total goodness, the delicious Space Oddities rare Euro-grooves & library music comp put together by Jess and Alexis Le-Tan and Goblin City’s remix by Holy Ghost! were but two highlights.

Discos Capablanca was born in 2008: astrological omens and dream messages of dancefloor sweat and world domination through honest fierce & love acted upon by enlightened Berlin top mystic and bonafide gentleman Hugo, the beginning of something special. We hear that Capablanca reference no. 2 is in the oven right now. 2009 is going to be hot.

Stickydisc became firm favourites by way of the release of Watussi’s “Purple Moon” (a crunchier Emperor Machine with drunken Moon rant chorus) and Babytalk’s “Chance” (a skeletally deep night ride to the planetarium where dark secrets become gravely apparent).

Prins Thomas released Windsurf’s debut LP “Coastlines” on Internasjonal and the all conquering majestic power of Lindstrøm was bestowed upon the world in a fittingly epic gesture that was the “Where You Go I Go Too” LP. While we all got lost amongst the pyramids with Hans-Peter, Black Devil Disco Club was fiendishly completing his trilogy of black chrome evil with the “Eight Oh Eight” 12″ (remixes to follow soon, including a Hercules & Love Affair version). Padded Cell crept like a twitching corpse from the murder basement of DC Recordings with “Night Must Fall” a tale of undead dancing deep underneath the dark streets of London and pyro-pagan rituals deep in the caves of Summerisle.

(image from The Tommyboy)

The neo-gothic synth nymphs of Fan Death stole away hearts on the blood splattered dancefloors, and Diamond Vampires weaved asymetric glass spiderwebs to ensnare high society witch covens and downtown succubus hookers. The spirit of 1984 possessed Zombi’s vintage synths and a gleaming creature strutted through the clusters of neon palm trees and faceless skyscrapers, a creature known as Lovelock. Lovelock joined the headspace of the Valerie crew who released cuts from College, Minitel Rose and Anoraak all digitised actors recast in cheap SFX and shock-horror musical remakes of The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink and Heathers.

The horror was yet further extended with Quiet Village’s LP “Silent Movie”, one of the albums of the year. The hammer-horror style crimson lighting of “Circus of Horrors” soon faded to the pastel shades of azure on “Pillow Talk” and “Utopia”. While not strictly disco, we are sure we can hear snippets of heavily edited alt. dancefloor tracks that make up the macabre mosaic of background music to ’70s wildlife documentaries and Cerrone at 33rpm that the album is. Phantom Slasher utilised the same cut n’ paste with effects to create the tumbling and confusing beats of “Keys to the Tripod”.

Every disco-dancer and their hot still with-it mom was more than aware that Italians Do It Better existed this year, with the gleaming neon palace of Glass Candy erected in the centre of the Earth where Ida No and Johnny Jewel sat upon their flashing pink and blue thrones, and Chromatics hung out in leather and tarnished sequins in a suitably darkened corner of the royal courtyard. Tiedye began the disco, but it was up to Professor Genius to come on at 1am and slay the floor with hypno-medieval italo-kraut from the “A Jean Giraud Part One” 12″ released on Thisisnotanexit and the hyper kinetic terror-NRG found on the “Down There” EP.

Professor Genius – Cat’s Eye

But all went silent for the triumphant return of the Queen of the Decadently Damned, Miss Grace Jones. “Hurricane” was like being beamed back to the classic first albums, with a giant 50ft Grace stalking across a Jamaican landscape like a skinny limbed spectral warrior woman. As we mentioned before Aeroplane remixed the first single with fizzy synths reaching boiling point alongside undulating arpeggios casting a fearful cloud over the forced happiness of the original. Its off to the acidic cyber-jungle for the Cosmic Jam remix from the unofficial 12″.

Grace Jones – William’s Blood (Cosmic Jam Remix)

No self-respecting disco best of should be without its share of DFA, and here is ours. Black Meteoric Star, the dark house alter ego of Gavin Russom, rumbled over the airwaves of Beats In Space every so often this year to the great joy and wonder of listeners. If you were lucky enough to catch his remix of Britney Spears’ “Piece Of Me” then you were probably equally spellbound by its apocalyptic death-pop drone and black-hole heart. But his time will be in ’09.

Hercules & Love Affair were held aloft as the disco kings and queens this year. “Classique #3″ sadly never saw a release, but the jacking stutter of midnight classic “You Belong”, the diamonds floating on the water glimmer of “Athene” and the Yazoo remixed by Sylvester funk of “Raise Me Up” more than made up for it. If you had the chance to witness them live you would have been lost in the neon corridors of the psychedelic house reworkings that each track received.

Hercules & Love Affair – I’m Telling You (Live)

This recording comes from the band’s set at Koko in London – the whole thing can be found here.

(photo above by Nicolaggio)

And let us finish this mucho bueno post, and this year of decadence, dance, crisis and hopeful beginning of change with an exclusive from New Jersey robodisco crack squad Pink Stallone. They have seduced us most effortlessly with the robotic strutting of their sparse n’ sexy compositions during 2008, it’s only right they send it off. Winner.

So- just play ‘New Fate’ before midnight and welcome the New Year with top class styles, what styles, well, these fucking styles:

The styles equivalent of Indeep vogueing against (Grandmaster Flash’s) Scorpio in the midst of a whirling cloud of smoke filling the magenta spaces of a diamond-shaped dancefloor surrounded by Debbie Harry mannequins .

Beat that.

This song is poison lipstick the colour of chrome smeared of the walls of a vicious trap. Bless Pink Stallone, kick off 2009 in a most wicked way. We heart U.

Love Saves the Day’s comeback at Micro was utterly joyous, a dancefloor packed with people spinning in the pink mist to the sweetest sounds of the disco diaspora. Well, it’s happening again this Saturday at Micro, 11-3AM, drink deals and stuff, get in cheap via the Facebook collective.

Ours is a broad and inclusive church where we of course worship the classic canon, but also celebrate the new psyche sounds, Lindstrom’s spirit was at some point seen floating over the dancefloor with a benevolent smile, get down with the trebly discoid punk of Liquid Liquid, ESG or Pulsallama, roll up our sleeves to boogie in neon manoeuvres of cheesy italo and freestyle glory, regress to a pastel past of thrills and kills by the hand of Jan Hammer and Harold Faltenmeyer and, of course, mosh mad to the freakiest hi NRG ever to scare the shit out of the respectable citizenry.

Divine’s Native Love went down a storm, but then how could it not, this is after all Rimini punk rock for the whooping dancefloor, to be preferably consumed in a sweaty and damp basement populated by total freaks. Socially unaware sex aerobics, the dirtiest dream ever to blush the cheeks of those china-faced Kraftwerk automatons, Giorgio Moroder jacked on world-class Crystal, everything you want, we are so there.

And this particular remix is pumping.

Divine- Native Love (1984 Extended LP Version)

Pink Stallone have a rather cool thing going on, mid-tempo detail-obsessed minimalistic structures decorated in the glitz and stridency of 80s bubblegum pop and Italian drama make up for contradictory dance moves, which are the ones we love the most. The crescendo in Ghostfriend is exemplary, just check out the different streams of sound swirling slender over you like a swarm of beautiful birds of fire drawing shapes in the air, to finally crash against the silver glitterball in an explosion of exalted neon fireworks we would stop to behold fascinated if we weren’t so busy getting down on the floor tres classy. These guys are definitely onto something.

Johan Agebjörn is a constant source of good times at 20JFG HQ. Besides his excellent labour of pop sorcery piloting a tear-shaped time machine which that shy diva of snow fractal disco loveliness Sally Shapiro rides across the pink seas of pop awesomeness, his mindblowing remixes (we can’t wait to post the synthetic percussive techno odyssey into which he has transformed Lindstrom’s ‘Grand Ideas’), he also has a penchant for ambient, as demonstrated in his debut album, ‘Mossebo’, just released by Lotuspike. It is from there that ‘Ambient Computer dance’ is taken. This tune, inspired by early Autechre also reminds us of the heavenly synthetic landscapes created by Chris and Cosey.

Listening to it makes us think of astonishing panoramic vistas rendered in pale LCD green over the inky black of a command-line menu, altitude lines defining a minimalistic mountain range over which we glide gracefully in the arms of warm electronic currents, like a robotic carrier pigeon flapping slender wings of chrome to deliver a message of love in a faraway place.

Johan Agebjorn- Ambient Computer Dance

Dissident continue blowing the flames of our faith on the future of abstract/physical dance music with their new release by the mysterious The Off Key Hat. It seems that the kids who know their shit are lapping up this brutalistic ‘Moroder via jacking bleepy Eurotechno’ kool aid like warhounds in a bloodsplattered tundra, and we very much understand why, there is a pensive aggressiveness to this whole operation manifest in those pretty utopian robo-melodies towards the end which elevates our spirits like some lost nugget of Jarre style melancholy soundtracking the muscular flexing and pumping of a gym full of tattooed Ray Bradbury obsessed lycra’d hunks

The Off Key Hat- This is Not…

We reckon up and coming New Jersey kids Pink Stallone might be headed for places of greatness with their melancholic nouveau disco moves, you can notice the scintillating scent of 20JFG faves Glass Candy in their music, as well as the epic riffage of a Jan Hammer dusky strut, but processed thru one of those digitalising devices that turned Jeff Bridges into the program to end them all, and one that could cry too (it was the Eighties!).

Pink Stallone- Swiss Ambulance

Swiss Ambulance is total immersion in a solution of colloidal neon melodies inside which you find yourself suspended surrounded by phosphorescent algae which tinkle with nostalgic echoes of old school italo, if only you replaced the cocaine with codeine, hence all those red dragon tails coiling sexy around you. Yikes!

And after all this nuanced intrumentalism, let us say bye for the day with with a piece of lyrical excess by the hand of proper back in the day Super Radio avengers Heartbreak, more particularly the sweet remix of Soul Transplant ‘somewhere in between Rimini and Cologne’ that our best pals Allez Allez have come up with, for devastating effect. Now, we are onto some serious shit here, a pure feral dancefloor hands in the air slo-mo skrunker sliding like an electronic boa constrictor luscious between the gatorskin trousered legs of a vocal performance so over the top we’d be excused for thinking that passion was back in pop (or it was the Eighties!).

Now set the sky on fire kids, with total high energy,
