As we approach thee end of 2010, we open the gun locker, gaffer tape a flashlight to our pump action shotgun and slide into the vietcong tunnels of what went on this year. There be monsters there.

Being the all encompassing unstandardised weirdoes that we are, we make no attempt at ranking our choices, or to classify them by format. We just about manage to drop them into different buckets which aren’t quite genres, but a chromatic scale of the kirlian aura colours that they impressed upon us.

Let’s begin with black. Things that go slash in the night.

Chris Carter – The Space Between: Optimo music present to us a resurrected artefact from the dawn of our current philosophies. Instrumental sides to the freestyle battles of Gods.

Can be read as a cyberpunk anthology, or as a collection of fashion tips for the cavalcade of the damned.

Florene – Homemade Extacy. Those blips you see breaking the speed limit in your radar, lt. Strumpf, as you swig on your hip flask behind a battered roadside advert in the scorching Texan night, they aren’t your average joy riders. No, they are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and they are looking for a rave.

Gatekeeper: Giza.Herr Mannheim, I think that upgrading the operating system of our robotic assembly line with a code sequence downloaded from an anonymous source located somewhere in the sidereal voids wasn’t such a hot idea.

Indian Jewelry: Totaled. Dorothy is bored in her house in the middle of the desert. A whirlwind takes her to a world of impossible colour . She jacks a pickup truck and storms down the yellow paths with her gang of metal men and talking beasts, under a black cloud of flying monkeys. Oz is toppled and anarchy ensues.

Liars: Sisterworld. This is the sort of pop music that fills the airwaves in those desolate places where prepubescent worshippers of a pagan cult slaughtered all the adults.

Married in Berdichev: Readying. Walking down the private collection of the Hunterian museum at night, where beauty stands still, preserved in aspic.

(This is a black ops patch featured in the book that we stole the title of this post from- you can get it here. And as ever, thanks to Sci-fi-o-rama for the discovery)

A behemoth has crashed against the forgotten shores over which our Fortress of Solitude rises with its jagged edges and maddening spires. We stare at it grimly from our balcony, not down but up such is the magnitude of the dead beast marooned in our land.

Because it is dead, or is it not?

It surely reeks of death, more than death, it reeks of dark spaces where death is alien because life never belonged there in the first place, of dark spaces violated by unholy pilgrims of hallucinated provenance.

But if it is dead, then it must have been alive once, for isn’t its vast hulk tattooed with scars begotten by cruel claws, and doesn’t blood spill from its wounds viscous like the oil that fuels the most grotesque nightmares?

Our best scanners have told us nothing about its contents, so we prepare for exploration. We toil in our workshop sharpening our blades and coating our breastplates with alkali solutions, scratching exes in the tips of our munitions.

Because if it is dead, then there must be something still alive inside it, we can hear it. Perhaps stellar Noahs clad in obsolete spacesuits, kidnapped from the dark side of the moon. Or monstrous parasites gorging on its decaying digestive system, one designed to break down the emptiness of the void into its quantum constituents. A subsonic drone infiltrates our alcoves in the darkest night, the silence is broken by shrieks as abnormal lightning is vomited by a limpid sky into the periphery of the carcass, like timid carrion birds scared of disturbing the lumbering predator.

The full moon won’t say.

Or maybe the sounds are but the snoring and wheezing of the tired traveller resting after a long journey, dreaming of the moment when it awakes to behold its new dominion.

We won’t await until then to find out. We head down the crystal staircase and across the cancerous tongue of sand, over the burning oil. And into the belly of the beast.

Now we are inside.

Watch your corners.

Teeth of the Sea- A.C.R.O.N.Y.M

Teeth of the Sea shall be unleashing upon yourselves their second album, ‘Your Mercury’, on the 22nd of November via Rocket Recordings.

Being the pure and proficient paladins that we are, we got first dibs on it last week. Since then we have arisen a handful of levels in the staircase towards illumination. Now this is a mother of an A.L.B.U.M. (as in A Luminiscent Beckoning Umbran Magick) that needs to be confronted in its transfixing totality.

We pity you who will have to await for it, because by the time it starts evolving you, we will have already become singularity bitches awaiting to lash you around with mono-filament whips, alas, under the command of Teeth of the Sea themselves who, by virtue of having produced the conduit in the first place, will have reached the state of G.O.D.S. (Grooving Of Debauched Sanctity). Darn, we voted for Kodos!

But being the charitable dudes that we are, we are leaving you today with a morsel off it, and one bound to endow you at the very least with mild Telekinetic powers. Not least because it sounds like Ennio Morricone hooking up with Hawkwind to soundtrack the fall of Atlantida as it happened, hovering over the fierce waves while the future ghost of Olaf Stapledon stares with a benevolent smile from the magenta clouds above, and the illuminati drop from their golden towers into the jaws of the antediluvian sharks below. It is heavy like that.

What can I say that Julian Cope hasn’t?

Patience, patience dear reader, there are so many things you could do in 20 minutes, you could capture the secrets of the Zeitgeist in your feeble fist, like an ephemeral firefly whose wings are loaded with the power of the now, indeed, you could skim the surf bubbling at the top of the wave before precipitating into the oblivion of the forgotten.

Or you could stay with me, sit in that noble chair over there and listen to Year After (Entering Into Nothing) with the utmost concentration, for the 20 minutes that it lasts, watch layer after layer of beautiful freeform cha-boogie melody and rhythm mingling in the air like specks of diamond dust, sinuous tributaries converging into a golden river which is a piano which is the beginning of dawn, that moment when, through an uncanny alchemy, the darkest night breaks into day.

Because it is then when the music bursts with the utopian zest of the Boredoms at the apex of their psychedelic glory. This is the progressive answer to Juan MacLean’s Happy House, and the song that Lindstrom and Prins Thomas didn’t have space to fit into their last album. It is incredible.

Have patience, it will be worth it.

Iblis Kotor- Year After (Entering Into Nothing) (feat. Anes Guo)

Iblis Kotor’s Year After (Entering Into Nothing) is included in the latest release by Indonesia’s most awesome Space Rec.

O Brassica, through which deft exercise of the dark arts do you tap into the ebbing and flowing recesses of 20Jazzfunkgreats dark imagination? You have invaded our nights with invisible terrors, feline eyes glaring from the murky space beyond a door ajar, you have transformed our Cold Pumas into satanic titans lashing in the corridors of a concrete bunker, what now, we ask?

Well, you speed out the tempo and quote Goblin at their coke-addled most euphoric best, Discocross rather than Suspiria, you have produced an undead synth-boogie anthem for mysterious cat-people to breakdance to in the back alleys of the decaying metropolis, and a candidate for the soundtrack for Marathon Man if it had been directed by John Carpenter, we surrender, what next, what next?

Brassica- Venom Season

Venom Season is included in a record soon to be released by Nocturnes.

And as promised, here you have the mixtape that Teeth of the Sea have put together for us in order to celebrate the launch of Hypnoticon Viva, their new 12”. I am listening to the record (which you can, for example, fetch here), 2 minutes into the title track and a simmering halo of progressive power has already started to take form around the turntable, unspeakable forces peek from the other side. What can I say that Julian Cope hasn’t?

Check out the mixtape: Fly like Jodorowsky, Kick like Peckinpah. That’s the way it’s done.

One of your 20jazzfunkgreats scribes is rocking those motherfucking epistemological styles, you know how it goes. Paul Feyerabend, dark polemic master of methodological anarchism blows some minds in Against Method: the real scientist improves the theory of Genesis until it challenges evolution.

Behold Foot Village doing that with dance music- first we had African drums. Then we had the Butthole Surfers. Then we had the Boredoms Mk. 1. Then we had the Boredoms Mk. 2. Now we have our favourite Angelinos railing the as yet unnamed inhabitants of the Garden of Eden into the vortex beyond, start a drum party over the Goddess’ taut bosom so that the Universe can get restarted.

Can’t wait to see them live when they come around Europe in their next tour, everything’s going to shake.

Just check out the video. And get the record here.

Teeth of the Sea are the star-destroying psychedelic combo featuring our comrade and keeper of the wisdom of the Old Gods Matt Colegate, watch them live storming the gates at the edge of time and you will know what we are talking about. Inside the Space Capsule is to be included in the forthcoming 12’’ ‘Hypnoticon Viva’, due out in January, and yes, it is a cover version from the Flash Gordon soundtrack.

Set up precariously over a mound of skulls, our heroes direct with power magick arrangements the gentle manoeuvres of squadrons of hawk men as they prepare to join battle with the hordes of Ming the Merciless, what they lack in hawk wings they make up for with Hawkwind, martial drums and lush synths which unfold like a cat’s cradle of gamma rays inside the powerful hands of a ghost titan, spirit of defeat snatched from the Jaws of Victory, you know it’s more epic that way.

Teeth of the Sea have a bit of a tour going on in November with Thoughtforms (Invada records) and Gnod. The dates are 20th Cable st. studios Limehouse London, 21st Louisianas Bristol and 22nd Islington Mill Salford.
